Default grinding whining

So I've had my rearend out for awhile getting the pinion bearing replaced....and today I reinstalled it, got everything together and took it for a drive. I already knew my rear rotors were a little warped and the brake pads were down to about 2mm...so I figured that was causing the metal on metal grinding noise.

I take my car back up, put the rear on jackstands and take off the wheels.... I start the car and give it some gas and the grinding/whining is there alright! So I take off the calipers and rotors real quick and try again.

No more noise! So I head to the Zone and get new rotors and pads, install those...the driver side is still grinding/whining.

What could it be? I thought I narrowed it down to brakes, because it won't do it with no brakes on the car....

Hmmmm... hopefully not a wheel bearing??????? (it is NOT the gears, they are quiet as a mouse)

I'm not sure if my method of testing was correct...but hopefully it has something to do with the brakes since no noises are made when the rotor/caliper is off.

Mine was the parking brake shoe.. It drove me nuts! Have you taken the calipers off and held the rotors on with a few lug nuts? If not try that and see if it still does it.

Wow, it was so stupidly simple... I feel as if I just lost as many brain cells as I would have if I watched American Idol and Survivor at the same time.

It seems that when I was reinstalling my rearend, I bent the dust cover on the driver side and it was rubbing my rotor!

Wow! Haha.. Thanks BlackSS for reminding me to try it with just the rotor on.
