hey guys/girls, i have an '01 SS with ls1 and some bolt ons... was getting ready to change my oil and was wondering what is better for a car with around 80k miles. royal purple or mobil 1 fully synthetic. i have always used mobil 1 5w30. is this oil weight what you would suggest for a car with 80k miles?

I use Royal Purple, but I'm going to give the Amsoil a try on my next change.

Well, let me get this out of the way before the dam breaks. Mobil 1 is now a group III oil. Apparently several years ago it was re-formulated and is not a "true synthetic" as Royal Purple is a group IV and IS a true synthetic. Now personally, since oil has become outragious, I have had to cut costs. I am a Red Line Fan, but have gone back to Mobil 1.

There is a website which lists everything you ever wanted to know about oil, its along the lines of bobtheoilguy.com or something.

People here like the following:

Penzoil Platinum
Amsoil
Mobil 1
Royal Purple
Castrol Syntec 0-30 Euro Formula

I think the weight of oil is what you may want to worry about over the brand. All of the above are very reputable brands and people stand by them. Personally, I have always ran 5W30. I have 70,000 miles on my car with a new cam and springs and such. I have changed to 0W-40. The 0 for the start up protection, and the 40 for a bit thicker oil when hot.

Pennz Plat here. $25 from from Wally world + $4 A/C PF46 from Autozone = < than $30 synthetic oil change. PP rates real high for shear and gives good UOA figures according to Bobistheoilguy. Good bang for buck!!

Yeh, thats right Moble 1 is no longer a synthetic oil!

They sued the Quakers in court since the Quakers advertised their dino oil as synthetic. Unfortunately, Moble lost the court case, so everyone can call their dino oil synthetic.

Since true synthetic costs much more to manufacture, Moble decided to switch the formula which is now based on dino oil.

Consequently, this SUKs!

I run the GC 0w30, not a problem so far but it's expensive and I guess hard to find in some areas, never had a problem here though.

I used Mobil 1 for years and now i have been useing Ryal Purple. I'll change out the trany and rear end soon. Check out the Ryal Purple Web, They have a 60 something Nova on a dyno that gained 20 RWHP, After changing to Ryal Purple in the Engine,Trany and Rear end. Don't know what it had in it befor, but was interesting to see.
