Default Anyone running a Stall and Stock 4L60e?

As the title says, how amny of you guys are running stall convertor in a stock 4L60e?

I have a 98 C5 with some bolt on's, stock cam, no spray, 87K. I have a 3.42 gear and Vig 3600 stall sitting in my garage. I loved the stall in my past daily driven turbo'd C5, but that car had a built A4 and a lot more power. I DD this car, and would just like it to be more fun to drive (i.e. quicker than the mid 13's it's capable of now) but I'm worried about toasting the A4. If I put in the stall, I'll add a cooler for sure.

Anyone having any luck with stock A4's in mid 12's cars?

probably 95% of the people here have the stock trans and a performance converter. You'll be fine, just get a cooler.

Im running an ss4000 with a cam peaking at about 6100rpm on the stock tranny, absolutly no problems.

With a good cooler the trans could last indefinitely. It could also go out in a month or two, there is no way to know for sure. I ran a VIG 3600 on a stock tranny for quite some time. I then (out of necessity) bypassed the cooler and kept racing it on weekends and it lasted about 2 months.

As long as you keep everything cool with a good aftermarket cooler (Hayden 243012) and stay with bolt-ons only (no cam,
N2o) with the stock shift points it should last a while.

Awesome guys, thanks for the input!

I know I can have it built and throw some power to it, but I'm trying to not spend $10K on this car just yet. I'd really like it to be able to run some mid 12's on some bolt on's and sound nice, be a nice DD while I do some other (read: more important/more mature i.e. boring) things with my money.

Oh for sure, but if I built it I will end up Camming it, then Spray, and Heads and a FAST, and Drag wheels & Tires etc... I'll end up with 10K in it. If I leave the trans stock It'll limit me from spending heaps on further mods... kinda backwards way of self control Knowing my luck the stock trans will toast itself a week after, the stall, and I'll end up on this path anyways

SS3800 with a stock 4L60E and no problems here. I just don't shift it much past 6200 and run two 24K coolers.

Cool. So now how fast are you guys running with stalled, bolt on, stock A4's? mid 12's? Elevens?

A friend of mine with an mildly built A4, SS3600, 3.42, DR's, LT's, X-pipe and Exhaust runs mid/low 12's in his Vette. No induction, 170K miles.

I figured I could equal that even with a stock Auto and a little better breathing, fresher engine.

I have a stock trans with a Vig 3600 and a cooler on my TBSS, no problems so far.. I have a 3qt deep pan thats about to go on as well, more fluid never hurts a trans.

cam and spray with a built trans doesnt cost alot, or if you have self control, just build the trans to the teeth in preparation

True. An RPM Level 5 w/ Billet O/p Shaft is ~$2900, that plus an NX kit, Cam Kit, Headers/Exhaust/Intake, some wheel & tires to make it hook, and a 5 Bar point to keep me from getting kicked out at the track, and all the little supporting bits and pieces comes out to about $9000, on my Excel Spreadsheet, and several of those pieces were used/second hand/buddy deals. That setup would probably run mid 10's.

I love putting cars together, I've spent heaps of money on several setups on several car's in the past. I've had 2 different cars that have run 10's and as fast as 140mph with 4 different setups, turbo and nitrous, but I haven't personally owned an single digit car, though I have built and tuned a few. I want to build a 9 second car, but right now, it is out of my budget.

So instead, I'd like like to put together a simple fun daily driver setup, with a budget under $2500, just hope the stock auto will live behind a converter with moderately stock power levels while I invest and save and act boringly grown up

120,000 miles, stock tranny, midwest 3400 stall, and tranny cooler. Just clicked off an 11.9 pass last week....she goes to the track at least once a month when it's open. No signs of slipping yet....and it helps the fluid/filter usually doesn't stay in there over a year.
