Default Want a Strange w/ 3.73's? Think again!

Just got off the phone w/ Strange. The 3.73 gearset is no longer an option on the 12 bolts and 9". From what I understand they are having noise issues so they are being dropped. I ended up getting a 3.90 in my 12 bolt as it is what they recommend in it's place (motive or US gear is what they use).

So if you are thinking about a 3.73, I guess it's a no go. Kinda sucks because that's exactly what I originally wanted in my A4.

Interesting, Ratio will not dictate noise.

Yeah they just stopped using them.

I've heard of different ratios from different manufacturers being noisy. Like a Richmond 3.90 is noisy from what I am told.

I really didn't want to get a ratio that aggressive it's still a street/weekend car. I was even thinking about staying w/ a 3.42. Oh well I got it now, I guess it's only another 150 rpms or so. I hope it ends up working out for me.

WTF ever...my Strange with 4.11s whines like a bitch. It isn't the gears...it is their dumbass installers that couldn't set gears if they had a gun to their head.

My 3.70's don't whine at all either.. Of course I'm only at about 400 miles on it.. So gotten on it or launched it at all yet.

I bought US Gear/Strange 12-bolt 3.73's directly from Strange a while ago and never heard about this. I think it was over a year ago though. Fwiw, my 4.11's whine like a **** too.

Moser also use U.S. Gears and is experiencing some problems..

I ordered U.S. Gears 3.73's a while back and they were genuine GM. There was a page in the box saying they could not keep up with demand. These GM 3.73's I got had special instructions and were called a Phoenix cut gear set. Whatever that means.

Exactly, we both know it's quality and setup that cause it....

In my day to day function, I use exclusively Yukon gear. In some cases they are reboxed Richmond, OEM, etc - they only rebox quality gears. US Gear, Genuine Gear, etc are their economy line. Anyway, their F9" 3.70 is noisy, but they tell you that before hand.

I'm getting a very sour taste in my mouth with all this Strange issue.... Up until a few weeks ago, I would have recommended them to anyone - or even bought from them myself - no longer. In fact, I couldn't believe some of the problems I was hearing. Now, as soon I see the Strange name and an issue, I know what's up.

Wow that's pretty decent. I can tolerate the whine myself, but I don't drive the car a lot, plus it's loud (exhaust) anyways. Mine sounds just as loud as it did during the break in period. I guess I can deal with it as long at the rear holds up, which it easily should. Everything else about the rear I like, other than the price LOL.

I bought the series-4 3.73's. I wonder if these are the problem child or if it's the series-3 3.73's.

I dunno but when I got it last summer they did not offer the ratio at all. Said they wouldn't do it.

Look at the gear and see if the tooth surface is nice, shiny and smooth or? If it's nice and smooth and shiny, then most likely it will setup quiet - if done correctly. If it's bumpy and rough, then your headed for a noisy setup, regardless if it's done right and worse if done wrong.

If you cryo a loud set of gears, sometimes the process will finish them better and quiet them down.

I had them Mikronite processed by Crane already. From what I remember, the surface wasn't rough per-se, but is wasn't smooth. I'll have to look at them again to be sure.
