Default AF Members in FL...... Need opinions.

I'm thinking about trying to pull some strings with my chief to get orders out of here.. This base is a black hole, Holloman.

Was thinking of either Eglin or Tyndall... I need an ACC base, apparently you can't PCS from ACC to AMC unless you are going to or from overseas.. (and vice versa)

I've heard the gulf is due for another BAD hurricane, but how are things in FL? I'm CE Dirt Boy BTW. The manning is really low here, so I doubt they will let me PCS, but I've been throwing the idea around.. I'd be a darn plant there and finish up my career..

Coool..

I'd like a nice area as much as the next guy, but I'm just really concerned with the hurricanes.. I've lived through a couple back home in CT, but I was very young and didn't know any better. My old R.O. is stationed at Eglin, I think.. But he's deployed and I can't find his email int the global.

What's the housing market like?? What will a $120k house get me??

Tyndall is AETC. I wouldn't really be too concerned about hurricanes this far east on the gulf coast. Sure they do come up here, but rarely is there a very strong one that makes it this far east.

$120 house... LMAO! You'll probably find a nice trailor for that around here. Or a 30yr old fixer upper 2/1 house. Around tyndall you can search www.panamacitymls.com

Good luck.

dude hurricanes arent bad...ive been dealing with them since i was born...and since 1984 ive only had to deal with maybe 5 and none have been too bad. katrina was a fluke...and unlike louisiana and mississippi the buildings in florida are built to deal with hurricanes. the building codes here ensure that our buildings wont get wiped out. all the places there that were blown down were wood and old...we dont have too much of that here in florda any more, at least not in the newer areas.

Hey Bayer, why not put in for an Overseas short tour then get a follow-on to a base of your choice? Turkey, Korea (Osan), etc. Also, what about some special duty that you might be interested in, that'll for sure get your out of Holloman?

Who says you cant go from ACC to AMC or vise versa, we do it all the time, aircraft mechanics that is. You just have to change your patch.

Heck I would shoot for Patrick or MacDill if you could. Those are two decent areas to be around.

Hmm...

Thanx for the help... The housing market is NOT helping me buy my first house, at least in my price range. The one I REALLY wanted here the owners are not budging on the price.

I'm not going to Korea.. I may consider it if I REALLY get stuck here...

ACC nahh you can change commands. I only heard that its hard if you are like me and work on acft. I work on RC-135's and they are ACC assets I been to 3 bases and never changed command or wing. Im at 11 years now. Luckily for me the wife made tech and she just PCS'd to Tampa FL (MacDill) pharmacy she been ACC/USAFE/and whatever MacDill is. Any way I have to follow her now which will get me out of ACC and go to tankers. Its possible to move.

Then your not going to Tyndall then. There is only one ACC base and thats Eglin. Tyndall is AETC and Hurlburt is obviously AFSOC.

Also how long as you been at your current assignment? Last I heard, they still had a 4year TOS before you could be considered for a CONUS-2-CONUS assignment that AFPC won't bypass unless its for humanitiarian or something to that nature. Plus its to a place that I'm sure 80% of the AF wants to go to.

I went to Eglin last weekend actually and spent my time at destin at the beach. I had a blast. So I'd opt for that but Tyndal isn't bad from what I hear. I'm fuels so I wouldn't be able to go to Tyndal anywho.

I'm from Moody AFB by the way which is just 2 min down the road from FL.

You can get to MacDill, Just put in for JCSE at MacDill- it's a 4-year controlled tour joint special-duty. They do have a VM/CE squadron there, not just comm. The only downside is you might have to deploy a little more frequently and have to deal with the Army, but hell, you would be in FL though. With the housing market the way it is, you shouldn't have a problem getting into a decent house for 120K. Give them a call: http://www.jcse.mil/index_n.htm

I vote for Eglin. Tyndall I think was a **** hole; old base, paper mill stinks, P.C. is over rated. Hurlburt was a very nice base but the ops tempo and deployments where a little rough. Eglin and Patrick are my choices. Patrick I dont think maintainers can go to though. I have not been to Macdill but my boss was stationed there for several years and he said it was a great assignment. (supply troop though)

Yeah, I am a flyer and had no issues leaving ACC for AMC, so I cant see why that would be too hard, and its all relative, in the southeast you deal with an occasional hurricane, been at Macdill for 3 years, and havent had to deal with a hurricane yet, but hell a blizzard up north, or a flood/tornado in the midwest, itll all be just as bad
