Default Rear End Noise

ok,

2000 TA, M6, stock 10 bolt, I do have TCS, 41500, I bought used from Original Owner at 29000, WITH aftermarket gear (3:73) already installed. Upon purchase the rear end has always had a whine to it,,,the whine would "bounce" slightly when hitting freeway bumps, etc, nothing that sounded scary.

3/07, had a leaky pinion seal changed,,, fluid all over the place

7/07, B4 hitting the 600 mile drive to and back to the 07 TA Nats in Dayton OH, i had my local Chevy dealer "inspect" my gears to be sure we would be safe on our drive,,everything checked out great, cleance was good on the ring and pinion, teeth looked good, even the oil looked ok..

1/08 I installed headers and gave the car a good couple of runs ,,you know,,,fer fun..also noticed the pinion seal was leaking again during the install

3/08, B4 the 1 year warrenty on my leaky pinion seal expired, i took it in for the fix again.

4/08, slight clicking noice from *** end starts up,,,(i do not DD my TA, so maybe 200 miles from March?),,normal whining noise seems more pronounced, on the highway, esp goin uphill, seems like a low end humming of sorts at speeds of 65 or more....when your slowing down (netrual or not) the humming turns to a clicking, even pulling in the garage, its there, goes slower as the car goes slower,,,like i gotta baseball card pinned to slap my spokes on a bike or something,,,but only a deeper tapping,,,

Today, (5/26/08), debating if i should even start to tear off the cover and look inside,,(i have never performed any rearend surgery myself, although am proficent with, and have the tools needed),,car is in the air, and thats where im at.....any suggestions to what steps to take or what to look for,,im open to any help given to me.

Thanx all

Wayne

its no biggie to take the cover off,,will cost ya about 30 bux though (oil, additive, seal)

Mine seems fine until i get going (id say 30 or more) then it dosnt stop until i park it.

i dont see anything funny in my diff,,,,so,,,,bad yoke?, bad driveshaft?, bad u joints? I have no idea, and thought i would get a few pointers from here, but guess not.

Good luck with yours man

Bad bearing they may have over tightened the pinion when they replaced the seal. Sounds like a bearing in the rear. to me.

Magnetic base and a dial indicator to check your back lash and you'll need a press with a bearing installer, and a remover if you dont get the gear pattern set right the first time. I'm not sure where you would get the bearing puller and installers at.

If you dont have to drive ti all the time then save up and spend your $$ on a stronger rear. I have friends who have been through this process 3x and have like 3k in their ten bolt. Save up and do it right, or do it cheap and do it over and over and over.

not sure how old you are, but back in the day of being a kid,,we used to attach baseball cards to our spokes on our bikes (bicycles) to make a cliking noise as we went,,,thats exactly what it sounds like,,,click, click, click, etc. and it would go faster as the car went faster,,,on the highway, it sounded so bad, like a deep hum, esp going up hill

search ring and pinion install on google, lots of tips and tools there. Buy OEM gears and try the stock pinion shim first, then check the pattern. DONT drive it until the pattern is PERFECT if you want no noise.

Mine is making a roaring/bearing? sound all the time. Is it common for just axle bearings to go rather than the ring/pinion? 1995 Trans Am Auto 153K miles
