Default Roll Cage question

Under what circumstances would you guys get a roll cage? Would your drag racing bracket force you to install one? Do you value your safety and fear your driving that much? Would it stiffen up the chassis enough to justify the cost, inconvinience, and asthetics? Would you consider installing a rollcage in your daily driver?

What does a roll cage cost? Materials + installation?

I would run a roll cage when I decided to get serious about racing or was going fast enough to need one. I personally always over build stuff for added safety at the cost of a little extra added weight. Yes it will stiffen the chassis A LOT. I'd have a cage in my daily drive, unless you drive around with people in your back seat all the time it isn't a big deal and if my 326 pound friend can get in and out of his I am sure you could too

Cost is a big factor, it can be mild steel, DOM, 4130 and each will cost different. 4130 is the strongest and there for can be made with thinner material .083 vs. .120 or .134 which will save you weight how ever it will cost more. Mild steel or DOM can be MIG welded while 4130 has to be TIG welded, however assuming the person is a good welded a TIG weld by far is much cleaner looking.

i caged my car because it really helped my chassi, however, when your doing 130+ in the 1/4 mile and you hit sand at the end, no driver can save that car, it will do whatever it wants.

cages merely tie the frame up the way the dealership should of but were cheap and didnt.

A Roll Bar (5pts) is required by NHRA regulations when you reach a certain 1/4 mile speed. Most tracks use their rules as their guideline or rules and will kick you off the track after one pass if you are too fast without the proper/required safety equipment.

A Roll Cage (8 or 10 pt) is required when you hit 9.99 along with an NHRA licence.

Haha, James loves the acurate info. Good Stuff.

Actually to answer the first question. I would never install a cage (way to intrusive, ugly, and requires cutting the dash), but I am putting in Roll bars in both cars. It looks good on the Vert, stiffens the chassis and gets me past tech.
