Default going from 2.73's to 3.42

I'm going to put factory 3.42's out of an M6 in my A4 2.73 rear end. I understand that I do have to buy a ring spacer to make them work. Does anyones spacer fit better than anothers? (MR. Gasket, Motive, Jegs brand) Thanks

I'd go with one from a gear manufacturer.
They're not the greatest thing to have. They move the ring gear almost off the centering ring of the carrier, that and any variance in thickness will cause some weird noises. And they are rumored to make the rear weaker.
I'd try real hard to get the carrier that went with the 3.42's.

Actually the best advice would be to not go with a spacer, get the right series carrier or get thicker gears made for the different series carrier. GM I don't think offers gears for different series carriers.

In other words get a carrier made for 3.42's. Or take your chances with a ring gear spacer and GM gears. Or get a different brand 3.42 gear made for the 2.73 carrier.

Couldn't you pick up a used complete 10bolt out of an m6 for less that the cost of gears/install?

If ur interested I have a set of 3.73's for that carrier (Richmond Gear) still new in the box with a receipt. Seeing as how I already have that gear ratio in my car they're just gonna sit around. Lemme know if you'd rather stay away from the spacer.

I was doing 6.8xs with a ring gear spacer and put over 20K miles on the car and never had a single problem

It says right in your sig that you ran ONE 6.8 with a spacer.
