how do i use this slide hammer?
im trying to get my pilot bearing out with a rented slide hammer bearing puller from my local auto store... and i guess i just have no clue how to use it? Why does that weight/handle slide? I can only fit one of the jaws inside the bearing (ive read 1 jaw will work)... Now how do you properly use this thing? Thanks in advance

put the jaws on the front side of the bearing and tighten the nut to get the jaws to spread. Thread the hammer on the jaws then with your left hand supporting the back of the hammer, place your right hand on the slide with the slide nearest the bearing. Slide the hammer back with force until it hits the back where your left hand is and repeat until the bearing is out. Be careful with your left hand though!!! I have seen some smashed fingers from people putting their hand in the wrong place at the wrong time

I think what the other guy was refering to was a blind hole bearing puller. Where as you tighten the tool it spreads open to grab the bearing from the back side. Now sounds like you have the one with two fingers but only one fits. Right? You still might be able to do it, but the other workes better IMO. Both are slide hammers-the autoparts people usually grab that one over the blind hole puller.

your correct tillery..
i read that a blind puller works better as well..
I tried getting 2 jaws in but the pilot bearing is too small to fit both em in... i think when i get home im going to get some PB blaster or something similar, spray it a few times, then see if the slide hammer i have right now will work... if NOT, ill have to try and find a blind hole puller (which i hope i can find). For some reason the auto stores out in Seattle blow

I used the blind hole puller on mine. The bearing came out after about 10 good whacks. It was a lot easier than I expected after reading some of the stories on here about trying to get the bearing out.
By the way, be sure to replace it with a bronze bushing, if you didn't know that already.

on my buddies mustang we couldnt get the puller to stay on the back of the bearing, so we "modified" it a little bit so it would stay hooked, a couple good whacks and she came out, the hook part wasnt really big enough to stay on the back of the bearing so we grinded a little bit so it hooked on better

Yeah we could only get one of the "jaws" in there too so we shoved a screw driver in there with the jaw to make it grab, and after a few good whacks it broke free and came out.

nice idea.. i shuold have tried that...
im heading to auto zone after work, their tool looks promising.. its an actual "pilot bearing puller", and connects to a slide hammer.. the 2 jaws on the tool are thin so i think ill be able to actually fit both jaws inside the bearing..

Grab the blind hole puller while you are there. The tool you are getting ready to rent from them did NOT do the trick for me; even though it is called a pilot bearing puller. The difference is the blind hole puller is a circle whereas the pilot bearing puller is 2 jaws. The complete circle behind your bearing will have more force than 2 jaws.
When I went to autozone it cost me $200 on the credit card because I grabbed 4 tools; I wanted that damn bearing out and I didn't want to go back. As you know the good news it they give you the money back when you return the tools.
