98 monsoon deck in my 97 TA
ok quick background info...i bought my 97 TA and it already had an aftermarket cd player in it...i took that one out and put in another one, unfortunately when i hooked it up, my TRIP guage would reset everytime i started my car...this is the least of my worries right now, now to the real problem...I just picked up a Monsoon deck out of a 98 TA...All my plug ins look and fit the same as the 98...However, when i plug everything in, nothing happens...I know for a fact that the deck worked in the 98 TA...Would i still need a new wiring harness?...Any ideas on what the the problem might be?

There is no reason for a 98 deck not to work in a 97 car. They use the same mounting, wiring, and harness plug. Check your fuses first...the RADIO, RADIO ACCY, and POWER ACCY fuses are the ones to check first. If your power windows also don't work then it could be the COURTESY fuse which protects the BCM (which controls the retained accessory power circuit).
Hopefully the previous owner used a harness adapter and didn't butcher the factory wiring but if the fuses check out then you should check that the radio wiring harness doesn't have loose or damaged wires.

thats what i figured...unfortunately the original wire harness is butchered...and my passenger window is pretty much dead so that would have something to do with it?

No, the window doesn't have any direct connection to the radio. Both the radio and the power windows are powered by a circuit called the retained accessory power (RAP)circuit. This is what keeps them working for several minutes after the car is shut off until a door is opened. If the individual fuses that protect the radio aren't blown but you're not getting power then it's possible that the RAP circuit isn't working. You would be able to tell because neither window would work either. If that is the case then you should check the COURTESY fuse because it protects the Body Control Module (BCM) which is what runs the RAP circuit.

No, all years of cassette head units could control an external CD changer but CD head units didn't get that capability until late in 99. However, they both have the same external device port and everything else works the same. So the 98 not being able to control the changer means no more than that - the changer won't work with it but all other functions should still work.
