Default Photos - Painted Headlight Mod (Camaro)

I finally got around to baking my headlights in the oven. After doing this mod, I'd have to say it was a pain in the ***. The housing is easy to crack, and you have to be ultra-careful not to scratch anything. But, it does look different.

I painted the insides "Storm Gray Metallic" which is the same color as my truck. Kind of a medium darkness metallic gray. Just to be subtle.

Opinions? I'm sort of on the fence about the look.

I think you should have gone with black to accent the black in the hood scoop, the black rims, and the black convertible top. I notice it the most in the second from bottom picture. (side shot of whole car).

On second look though, I can kind of see how they blend in with the 35th stripes. I think black would have looked good also.

I think it looks good, but i also agree black would've been a better choice. But, thats more of a subtle change that most ppl wouldnt even notice.

I like it (love that color), but... I agree with the others, that you should have done black, on your car.

black sort of makes the painted headlights look like cheesy blackout covers though. There is metallic gray on the stripes, especially where it turns into the checker flag.

But, now you guys have me curious as to how black would really look. lol

How about opinions vs stock chrome? I think the darkened headlights kind of make the clear corners look too bright now. Anyone else?

I think it looks pretty darn good! I think the results are equally as impessive as stock. Nonetheless it is unique!

Honestly, I don't see why people paint them at all. The chrome looks sweet IMO especially when matched with the diamond clears with chrome inside them. It's just a clean look. If the cars came with black inside the headlight I bet people would be taking them apart and chroming them.

I've never liked the Camaro headlights. They look too Dodge inspired. Painting the outer edge of them makes them look a bit smaller and less obvious. My gf thinks the darker headlights make the car look less "happy" and more "mean".

Hey Tony,

Send me the files of your headlights. But send me the big file size ones. I think your digital camera has a high megapixel. The bigger the better because then I can zoom in really tight and change that gray to a black. Then we can see the difference. I tried to change on the pics you posted, but I couldnt zoom in and see what was what.

Photochopper,
Mike

I took the photos on the small setting, so that is as large as they get.

I painted mine black. Still they look kinda gray..

Personally I wouldn't take them back apart again for a change from gray to black since it doesn't seem to make much difference. I definitely think they look better painted than unpainted though. I absolutely love the look of mine.

That's exactly how I feel, and precisely why I'm not going to paint my headlights.
I like the way the diamond clears and the headlights match.

Yeah main thing to note here is it makes the overall look a lot different. It transforms them into "smoke" headlights. Compare a Marauder to a Grand Marquis and you'll see what I mean. It doesn't seem to come out in pics well but looks really good in real life.

Also, Ford did this to the Mustang after 1999 I believe. With the new "edge" design, they started out as chrome headlights like ours, and I think they went to a black background in 2001? The difference was subtle, but I noticed it and liked it better.

I think it looks good and the color matches the stripes perfectly. I like the way the high/low beams now seem more isolated and distinct. I was going to do this mod last weekend when I installed my apc clears, but I decided against it. I wanted to see how the clears looked with chrome headlights first. Honestly, I tried to smoke one headlight, but the lens didn't want budge after heating it up. I was too afraid to crack the lens/housing so I said forget it. After checking out your pics, I think I'm going to stick with the stock look because the clears really blend in with the chrome nicely.
