Default Rear Defogger ?

My rear defogger stoped working.
I am going to replace the relay in the fuse box tomorrow when I can buy one.

Anyone else had theirs go out?

The on switch is part of the HVAC control module.
I had mine HVAC replaced while ago under warranty the AC woudn't engage and the new unit had to be rescanned after being put in.

My question is can you just replace the On switch for the Defogger without
changing the whole HVAC module?

I hope its the relay. I traced the wires to where I can see themwithout much dissasembly they were ok.
Checked the Defogger itself there were no breaks in it.

So you get no light @ the defroster button? My rear defroster stopped working a long time ago (closer to when the car was new, in comparison). The dealer eliminated something that kept tripping in the wiring to it. Didn't sound too safe when they did it, but no fires or shorts yet, and the defroster still works.

Hey Chris,
The Light on the switch stays on, but the defrost does not work at all.

I'll try to change the relay if have time to pick one up today.
If not probably will visit a dealer.

Do you have heated side mirrors? Check to see if those still work. When my defroster quit on me, the side mirror defrosters still worked.

I wish I remembered what they said they had to do to fix my problem. I just remember them saying that they needed to eliminate something and tape the wires together instead. Also, I know it took me two visits to get it right. I think they replaced a relay the first time and claimed that it worked. When I got out to the car and remote started it, the fog or ice on the back window went nowhere. They said I was expecting too much too quickly, but they were just incompetent. When I brought it back, they realized that they had no clue and ultimately figured it out.

I don't have heated mirrors. Those must be nice.

But I got the relay this morning. $46 made in Mexico, probably cost to make was $5 if that.

I'll put it on tonight see what happens.

Hey bigboy did that work? My defroster went out today and was wondering if this worked for you.

Think I might take mine to the dealer though since I have the ext. warranty.

No the relay did not fix the issue.
I am postponing going to the dealer. I do have Major Guard though so should be covered. other than the deductible. Just don't have the time right now.

So if anyone is interested I took her in today and took them about an hour to fix. This is what they did "trace and repaired open in purple wire to rear defroster under right carpet/kick panel."

Was covered under the extended warranty.

Same fix I just did this weekend to my daughter's '04 Cavalier. Green connector located by the DS kick panel area had an open (toasted pin).

My defogger switch won't work now and the light will not come on at all. I replaced the fuse. The seat works but not the defogger. Any ideas?

When mine stopped working the light on the switch still turned on. I dont know, you may have a bad switch or relay.

Do you hear a clicking noise coming from under the hood when you hit the defogger button?

No clicking or any noises. The switch doesn't seem to engage and no light comes on even if I just keep it pushed in.

I went to a local dealer. Pop your fuse box look for the part number on the relay. Call ahead see if they have it in stock. Thats what I did.

Thanks. I thought the relay was in the switch and the defogger/seat fuse was in the fuse box. It's behind the fuse box?

Ok I will check that. I do have power coming into the switch at the HVAC panel, so I'm still wondering if it is that.

I don't have a designated relay under the hood for rear defogger. I checked the owners manual and under hood. I have a 2002 model if that makes a difference. The fuse panel in the car has a pwr seat/defogger and a HVAC fuse. Both these are fine. Under the hood in one of the panels there is a relay for HVAC blower/defogger timer, but the blower fan is fine so I assume that relay is ok and the switch has the issue.
