Default Tranny Fluid Change

I got an outragous quote to do a tranny flush for my local gm dealer of $269 and $189 from our local Mr Lube (+ tax). Damn i can't believe it is that much, so I was contemplating doing it myself ( not really looking forward to it cause it's damn messy). Is a flush really necessary or will the fluid change and filter change be sufficient. I've got about 25,000 k since the last change and the fluid is looking a dark.
Why is the flush so expensive other than the obvious reason for it being a dealer!!!
Is Dexron 6 the fluid of choice for everyone??

Thanks

DO NOT DO A TRANNY FLUSH ON A 4T65HD!!!! Just keep changing the fluid and filter as you normally do and that will suffice. Your tranny will be lucky to survive a flush since it over stresses the weak parts.

Yeah just change the fluid and filter. One place I went to said they only change the fluid because the new fluid cleans out the filter. I took that as a lot of BS so I went and got it done the right way: new fluid and filter. Cost me like $100

Do it yourself and save your money. Just done it last weekend it cost me $89 for the fluid and $26 for a GM tranny filter. A little messy but take your time and its not too bad.

Thanks guys. I'll do it myself and make sure I get a nice big drain pan. lol.
Probably will throw a shift kit on there while I'm at it.

i don't blame you I did. I got the one from TEP and it took longer to do clean up then it did to put the kit in. Car stays in first/second longer when you get on it.

As long as you know what you are doing, it should only take a couple of hours.

I did my own fluid change. Dealer wanted $120, cost me $72 for fluid and filter and a couple hours time cause I am old and feeble. Not hard to do, just loosen bolts on pan slowly, more on one side (lower side if jacked up) and be ready when fluid starts to run out.

Wow, that's insane but I know what you mean. I had my cutout welded in at a performance exhaust shop and didn't get a price to do it up front. Took just over an hour and they charged me $150. They did a great job though.

$600 , man. I keep hearing how easy it is.

I bought a truck that supposedly had just had a tranny flush. THe fluid looked relatively clean but it developed a whine shortly after i got it home. So i changed out the fluid (nice thing on the truck was the torque converter had a drain plug) Got 95% of the fluid out, and changed the filter and the whine went away and that was 5000 miles ago.

And the bottom of the pan had a ton of sediment. I think tranny flushes are a joke. Most of the time they dont even change the filter out as well. How is that supposed to help your tranny?

Default Transmission

I just had my transmission flushed, filter changed and a shift kit installed. Shifts feel sharper but the transmission is running hotter. ???

mine's running hotter also after a flush. I'm not sure why. About 15 degrees warmer.

if you are really worried about the mess just buy a cheap tarp and put it up under your drain pan to catch any over spill.. No matter how hard i try whenever i change any fluids some of it ends up on my garage floor.

Murphy's law, the wider an area you protect, the wider the oil spill. I used one of those short wide totes available ofr under bed storage to catch oil

Untrue.

The tranny's internal pump is what generates the pressure, so there's no abnormal "stress on the weak parts."

I will say this, a flush only makes sense if they're also dropping the pan and changing the filter. Reputable shops will do that, and if a shop tries to tell you that they recommend a flush without changing the filter, then you need to find another shop.

to make life easier on you all ZZP has made this....

It's a little expensive, and honestly the mess may be worth more than this, but I actually got one from them for $50 on Black Friday last year. They had a list of stuff, first come first serve, I saw it and yanked it quick. It's totally worth $50 imo.
