Have a question for you all?
Hey all! I am posting this because I have a serious case of someone talking **** all over my Monte. Here's the situation.... I have a guy that comes into my work all the time and he just recently acquired a 2001 Camaro Z/28 automatic. To my knowledge it is completely stock and my question is do you all think I can take him with my setup? Alabamaguy, I know you have a video of you taking a T/A's lunch, but I think that you had a few more mods than I have at the time you made that video. I just wanted to see everyone's reaction to this because this guy is really acting like a dueshce!!!!! I believe that I could do it! P.S. I do have my winter wheels on right now, so they are MUUUUCH lighter than my other ones.

Agreed, only one way to find out. If he's completely stock, race him from a dig and pray you get out of the hole better than he does, also shut it down right at the top of 2nd so he doesnt have time to use his top end power, and you just may surprise him. Odds are he'll probably still pull you, but you might shut him up if you put up a good race. Best of luck and keep us posted!

You'll have a better chance on him from a roll. It's an autmatic RWD from a dig and he's stock so traction isn't an issue. It's an 01 so it has an LS6 intake and 241 heads (IIRC) so it's the higher output version of the LS1. But really the only thing you can do is try it and see. Be sure to get vids.

This is a 01 that was "stock". Had some weight reduction and muffler but we're not sure what else. This was all bolt-ons sans intake manifold swap.

You're pretty-well modded, and if he was bone stock, it should be a close race.
There are couple of things to know, though. Even if he has stock hardware, the F-bodies have what's known as free-mods, and you wouldn't be able to tell at a glance. These free mods ALONE (cutting the plastic slot under the airfilter, descreened MAF, etc.) can be worth .2 and 1-2 MPH in the quarter. Also, common cheap mods for these cars would be airbox lid and a K&N filter, which can also add another .10 or two. If he has these things done, then it could be the difference.
That said, I'd race him and see. I also agree with crazyjoe in that, the faster you go, the more likely he will catch up or pull away. Most late 4th-gen automatic Z28s had 2.73 gears, and you should be able to holeshot a weak driver in one with your SS. The things is, once you start hitting highway speeds, he's gonna begin to pull hard just as the LS4 is starting to running out of breath.
You also may want to look under his hood before you race. If it looks like this, he's got the stock intake hardware, though he may have free mods lurking:
Note the stock air intake with the baffles on each side.
Now, if he has a lid and (and most likely) a filter, it will look like this:
Notice the less restrictive top and missing air baffles? This could be the difference between you winning and losing and will give you a better idea about the state of his car.
So, go out and give it your best and be sure to get it on tape!

Based on that, he may have some trouble beating this guy. The 2.73 automatic cars were pretty much point and shoot, but it's always possible he could hold a lead into the 65-70 MPH range.

This is about right for a stock Z28. I ran 13.70's with a 2.1 60-foot through a paper filter with less than 2000 miles on the motor and at 2800 feet of altitude and 80 degree weather. This was in a 2000 Z28, which had the more restrictive LS1 intake, too. With a lid, filter, and free mods, I was in the 13.30's in slightly better conditions.

3rd gear is right where the LS1 shines, especially with the LS6 intake on the 01-02. The race can be made interesting on the launch, but the LS1 makes it money right at 70-100.
