The W-Body FINALLY gets the 6-speed auto from the factory for 2012!
Saw this on GMI today:
http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...engine-100223/
Looks like it's also getting the direct-injected 3.6 motor (LFX), which probably means 310+ HP, though less torque than what we have now.
I'm not so excited about the engine as I am about the transmission. This could mean we'll finally have the missing pieces filled in for retrofitting this trans into our cars.

I'm not sure about the missing pieces. It'll probably get the 6T70 though.
Also remember that since it's a V6, it'll probably come with a completely different ECM than what we have.
I'd be interested in seeing how this gets put together.
I also wonder if it'll get Hi-Per Strut (doubtful).

From what the article says, the car is getting no other changes. Makes sense, as the W-body finally sails off into the sunset in 2013.
Still, it looks like we'll have all of the pieces now. Its just a matter of putting them together.

My guess is, in a stock-to stock race, the LS4 will launch harder and be stronger up through about 50 MPH or so, but just as the our car starts to fall on it's face, the 3.6 will be finding it's power band. I think the 1/4 mile times will be similar, but the 3.6 car might trap an MPH or so higher.
It will be interesting to see, and we won't have too long to wait, since the 2012 model year will get going in late summer!

I love the LS4, indeed, I love all of GM's Gen III/IV V8s. But I hate all of the compromises they made to get the V8 into the W-body. We got screwed on the intake and exhaust, as well as the transmission. If the 3.6 car turns out to be less "crippled", I'll seriously consider it when the time comes.

Only for a while.
That first gear ratio in the 6 speed will help that Impala off the line. And like LS1 Racing said, the moment we fall on our face (high 2nd and beginning of 3rd gear), the new 3.6 queen might catch up.
Of course, this is all dependent upon engine numbers.
Ideal situation for us: camshaft change to linearize our torque curve and 6 speed (6T75) swap.
