Default Plugs and wires for 2006 gxp

My grand Prix gxp now has 185k miles and threw a p0301 code ( cylinder one misfire ) so I'm gonna just change the plugs and wires as I believe this is only the second set.

Any recommendations between the tr55, tr5ix, tr6ix? Car is running like crap and rough at idle. So I just want to take care of it this weekend. The local places don't have the MSD wires I want, orielly had bwd, and I haven't checked auto zone yet. Any suggestions , or recommendations would be great. Thanks.

1, 4, 6, 7 will look the nastiest due to DOD/AFM.

No clue on wires but the NGK TR6IX spark plugs seemed to have been recommended. You can get them at Advance Auto. Though they are cheaper online.

Also if I can't find the MSD wires, I might just go with the OEM gmpp wires as they seem to be suggested as much as the MSDs

Im doing the same on my gxp with 152000 miles. I ordered msd 32829 wires. After I ordered them I realized they were for truck motors so they are about 2 inches longer. Ill have to see when they get here on Tuesday. Hopefully they will work

OEM`s are fine (www.rockauto.com) P/N 748NN or 89018058 or 89060377
so are the NGK`s (www.clubplug.com) RC-GMX107 stock# 51436

also gap the TR6IX at .035" use die-electric grease sparingly in the boots and NO anti-seize compound on the threads.

Oem wiresets suck, there's more than enough tests that have been run to prove that, msds are on summit racing

Anti-seize compound is not required as the NGK plugs have a Trivalent Metal Plating that Provides Superior Anti-Corrosion and Anti-Seizing Properties. This also eliminates the possibility of failure due to contamination/shorting/failure from anti-seize compounds.

The use of die-electric grease is recommended in the boot ends but SPARINGLY! It too is detrimental to plug performance and life. It is basically silicone and silicone is detrimental to all sensors and catalyst systems period, even very small amounts.

Sounds good.

Since I'm here I might as well ask this as well. I'm going to do valve cover gaskets at the same time as the plugs. Is there anything else back there worth getting at the same time? O2 sensor or anything?

This spring I plan on having DOD deleted , so other than the revised oil pan gasket and a tune, will I need any new valvetrain parts ( lifters, lifter trays, springs etc ). Mine has been one that oil consumption is a big issue, so I just want it gone. The new pan gasket in and a tune to keep it running good til the tranny takes a ****. At 185k its still holding up, but its also heavily babied as well.

Getting the DoD tuned out would be a plus. Starting this thread you were getting P0301 (misfire)from experience the MAF sensor is usually the first culprit (dirty) and then there will be other codes set if it was a particular cylinder. You could clean it and your induction system but with the mileage you show I would plan on replacing it (MAF) as each and every time it gets activated and again while operating the thin film/wire gets heated to lets say extreme temps. So after a while it gets real tired.
As for the o2 question, yes definitely change them both as their life expectancy has definitely been exceeded.
You can also get yourself 2 cans of seafoam and add a full 1 to the crankcase and a full one to the full fuel tank, dirve as normal and change the oil at least a 1000 miles later or to full change interval. At this time you can get another can of seafoam and add 1oz. to each quart of oil used, this will help the clean up after the DoD has been disabled.
As for the valve train parts you need nothing if all you are after is the DoD delete as it is as simple as turning off the DoD with a tuner like the inTune (recommended) and if this is the route you are going to go you can save lots of bucks and ignore the pan gasket as the DoD will no longer be dumping the oil in that direction.

I just purchased these off Ebay, shipped quick and fit perfect. The different part numbers are for red or black. Just have to message him the color and if you want race boots installed(those I guess look a little different so read the reviews before ordering)

I just replaced the plugs and wires on my 06 gxp about 3 weeks ago. I had a small misfire on 7 cylinder. I used msd wires and the stock plugs since they are already iridium. The dod plugs looked really nasty. I have had dod turned off since last fall. After the new plugs and wires she runs smooth as silk! I recommend the msds!

I have a question. I've read all around how the NGK TR6IX are highly recommended for our LS4's. But everywhere I go, they show the TR6IX will not fit. The TR5IX will fit but are not OE compatible. I'm assuming the TR6IX will obviously work since a lot of you guys have them. So why does NGK and other places state other wise?

Also, I'm looking for the NGK RC-GMX107 wires but no one sells these. Does NGK no longer sell them? What's the next best option?

The best option for wires is granetelli behind them are the msd wires mentioned above. Ngk wires have a significant amount of resistance compared to the msd and granetelli.

go with the tr6ix and be done with it. Probably a catalog error That hasn't been fixed yet.

Thanks for the clarification. I ordered the TR6IX and the NGX plugs. Was able to find them. Hope to have installed by weeks end.

**Update**
Installed TR6IX and the Plugs. Engine running smooth as if brand new. Feels much better than with the OEM plugs and wires. Almost like engine has better pick up.
Anyway, thank you for the clarification to my question prior.
