Default Rear speaker replacement

The rear speakers on my 2006 GXP have gone bad and I need some ideas on aftermarket replacement speakers and possibly how to wire them. It has the Monsoon system and I noticed the plug for the speakers has four wires going to it. I realize that two are for the woofer and two are for the tweeter. What's a good speaker to replace the factory speakers with and is there a trick to wiring them in? I've searched came up with a little info and I've even called Crutchfield but they were not much help. Thanks for any info on this.

Do they still hit as hard? How'd you split the wiring?

I havent done it yet on mine, did it on my other car with the factory pioneer 200 watt amp. As far as I am aware, the lows are powered by the monsoon amp and the tweeter is powered by the head unit, thats the reason for the separate wiring. Ill have to pull up a wiring diagram to verify the colors, but you should be able to wire them specifically to the new speaker as they are arranged on the factory one. Probably will require some soldering though. Just make sure you only buy the 2-ways.

if you can, pull one of the speakers and take a picture of the wiring on the speaker itself.

Here is a thread on another board that may help, I have not tried this yet but could be a future mod. Lots of confusing info out there about how to wire any speakers up using the factory monsoon amp. Use at your own risk

pigsticker how do the wires from the connector route to the voice coils? I see two going to the main voice coil wires, where are the other two going, are they seperated? Is the tweeter wires runned directly to the harness connector.

These Kenwoods(5 way) I believe also have the 4 posts to make installation possibly easier. I have used Kenwood in the past, they are a decent mid grade speaker. I have the Kenwood head unit, most likely with my upgrade I will use these as well as matching door speakers.

Thats peak power, they should be fine with the factory amp. Will defiantly sound better than stock. I don't need a ton of bass

Well I have never used 5 ways, but have used 4 ways that sounded fantastic. I have never used them with a factory amp though. I will over research this before purchasing anything

Yes. Two go to the main part of the speaker and two run along the top to the tweeter. They are separate.

Then that's basically how you will have to rewire whatever speaker you use to replace it. Use a 2 way and it will be a simple install. You probably could desolder the existing harness on the OEM speaker and use it on the new speaker.

Good deal. I've got a set of those JBL 6x9's that you recommended on the way. Thanks for everyone's help.

No problem, lemme know how it turns out, the wiring job should be reletively simple, should be able to disconnect the tweeter at the connector post on the speaker without having to touch any of the cones. Just make sure you heat shrink the wires since they will now be free to move. Splicing the old connector in should make it simple work as it should just plug in to the existing harness afterwards.
