ls4 in 98 GTP coupe
So what do guys think? I got a 98 GTP coupe and considering installing a 5.3 ls4 in it. I would love the unique sound of the v8 coming out of 97-03 W-body Grand Prix, and believe with the right setup it would be easyer than you think after all the archtectural of the body and engine bay spaceing is the same.

From what I heard, the hardest part about the process will be electrical...which is not trivial. I was just telling my friend this morning about how much more I liked the 97-03 body style. I'd like to see it done.

I would like to see it done as well. Would be a cool project. But I do agree, with the potential of the L67 it would be most cost effective to mod that. You'll be able to beat up on LS4's then.

Yeah the L67 is the way to go if you want to be cost effective...but there is nothing like the sound of a V8....which is why I traded in my '05 for an '06...less headache.

That might be true, but at the end of the day, you still have a V6 and not a V8.
On my L67, I had 1.8 rockers, Intercooler, 3.25 MPS, Thrasher CAI, Ported TB stage 2, SLP Headers, Downpipe and SLP exhaust along with a custom tune from MMS. I believe my final HP numbers were right around 240 or so at the front wheels, which was 50 hp more then stock. Stock is 190 at the front. SO yes, you can mod an L67 all you want and make it go faster then a LS4, but again, its just a V6. Thats one of the reasons why I went with the newer monte. Yes, it is front wheel drive, but no one can take away the fact that it has a V8 under the hood.
Plus the last time I looked, to even get an L67 mod'd to "blow the doors" off of a LS4, its going to cost you more then your "less money"! Any one can throw on a smaller pulley, but the more KR you have equals less HP. Plus with the wrong size pulley without intercooler, colder plugs, CORRECT custom tune, not a DHP 1.0 or ZZP 1.0, you will always have KR.
To even come close to those things, you would need the following:
Headers that are coated: Between 700-950 and I am not talking about PEM.!
Smaller Pulley: MPS is your best bet which is 125 and then you will be spending about 50-60 per pulley to drop to the smaller ones.
CAI: 200-300
Intercooler: Well, atleast 800 for a good one unless you want to change out your pistions to diamond coated racing ones.
Rocker arms or cam: This is where its going to cost you. Rocker arm kit is 400 and that comes with everything you need. YOu will not need to change out springs, retainers. The push rods, peds and rocker arms are all in this package. Now, if you wanna talk about going with a cam, then you will need to change springs, push rods, valve seals, Cam chain to a double roller as the single roller has shown to not hold up over time. Retainers and then your still using a flat tip rocker. So since you are in there, you might as well put in a nice set of 1.6 roller rocker arms.
Custom Tuned PCM: Well, you will need DHP or HP tuners and someone who can custom tune your car to get rid of the KR. Again the DHP 1.0 and ZZP 1.0 are ok, but nothing beats a custom tune. Also some might "lock" their file so you can not change out the files. Again, DHP or HP tuners will run you between 400-500
Now with all the good stuff will come with the bad stuff, you will need to change out your input shaft, gear chain along with harded clutch, and also look into a new torque converter aswell.
So, again anyone can mod a L67, but at the end of the day, the damage that can be cause from not taking the correct steps is going to cost you alot and since Ive been down the road of the L67 motors for 4 years, I know what goes into them to make them faster.
Ok, now i am going to have a beer after doing all this work.
