Default Advice on Alternator Overdrive Pulley for LT1

So, I recently purchased a 1995 Pontiac Trans AM. I noticed that that the volt gauge seems to dip into the red while idling at a a light with the brake lights & headlights illuminated.

The car has a new battery and new bench tested alternator. It also has new battery cables as well.

The vehicle was bought used and has an underdrive crank pulley. After allot of time spent trying to diagnose my charging issues I have to come to the conclusion that it's the UD pulley. BTW the car is an automatic, with zero aftermarket stereo equipment.

They do make an overdrive alternator pulley for the LT1, right? Please feel free to chime in with opinions. Thanks!

Raise the idle a little with reprogramming.

Or just take the UD pulley off, they are not worthwhile anyway. They are best left to cars with belt driven waterpumps.

Third option seeing as it is a "project car" anyway would be cam it and the raised idle for the cam will correct the issue too.

I noticed a pretty significant difference down low, the motor revved much easier.
Raising idle does help with the charging issue. My car was cammed, so it had a raised idle anyhow.

Pulling the belt off is well agreed on to be worth about .1 so how can slowing the drive 34% be worth much?

This is the sort of common sense you will find lacking on these boards, so be very careful what you listen too.

If you really think it a good idea get a smaller lighter aftermarket damper.

.....I bought it used and don't have the original. I do agree though, UD pulleys are not worth the trouble.

I would love to cam it, but I just bought the car and as such, still recovering from the purchase price.

Are you saying someone put a hunk of aluminum on for an UN and failed to bolt the stock damper back on over it???

If so you need to buy a damper ASAP before it eats the bearings.

The cheap aluminum UD pullies are simply meant to bolt between the stock hub and damper, not replace the damper outright. Guys have claimed big gains by just bolting on the UD withoput the damper becauwse it save a lot of rotating weight but is destructive to the engine so do not do it.

If in doubt post a picture of what you have.

I run the ASP 945103 kit myself. Small integrated balancer w/pulley and over- drive alt. pulley. I'm sure you can buy just the alt. pulley if you like. Search

If it has the damper yet all you need to do is remove the UD pulley from behind it.
