Stock one works great and is fairly light.

you can get the 'corvette" starter from AutoZone cheaper than a stock replacement and it is the gear reduction type. starter is also smaller/lighter.

I went with the Jegs Protorque (formerly CVR). It's adjustable, fits great, and plenty of turning power for my high compression 383. Way cheaper than stock.

have the original rebuild by a local shop is the best way i have found runs $100-$150 or less ipayed $80 for mine to be rebuilt 2 years ago and haven`t had any problems. one from a dealer or 2nd chain auto parts store are mostly rebuilt any way. if you get a new one from the dealer you`re looking at about $200-$300.

LT1 starters are factory mini-starters

mini torque starter
You mean a high torque mini starter specifically for high compression/blown engines

You just had bad luck. The only reason I had to replace my starter was because a rear main housing bolt back out and got in my starter gear and it exploded. Had 140K miles on it. Got a reman from AZ and it works great.

I use the LT4 style...Its smaller and lighter than the LT1 style...I went to AdvanceAuto and asked for a '96 Corvette starter...Works great...
