Question Head Porting - DIY

I have prepared my engine for the cam swap apart from pulling the hub and timing cover.

I had a look at the heads, and I could not believe how much metal I could shave off just by match porting them.

Now, since I have everything off, I can just take the heads off and match port them myself and a decent polish. I thought I might as well do so since I have everything off now.

Question I am asking is, how much will I gain from match porting with the CC503? Or could/should I have gone with a bigger cam? Are the gains going to be worth the extra cost of new headgaskets and ARP head bolts?

You won't gain much, but I bet you'll feel it at least. 10whp maybe.

I'm not sure on the gains, waiting to find out for myself but it will be impossible to differentiate the gain from my cam swap. I would do it tho then you can get some thinner HG's and bump up your C/R as well. I prob wouldn't of done it actually if I didn't have a spare set of heads that were fully assembled(w/ the springs I needed), impala HG's laying around and a buddy who builds drag engines pushing me to port match them and show me exactly what to do.

If you don't go hog wild and just "clean up" the passage way and do mild bowl work you'll pickup a few hp. Now if you go nuts and increase your runner volume too much you'll decrease the air velocity and probably won't increase the flow #'s that much, hurting power.

Exactly what I don't want to do, ruin the flow velocity of the air going into the cylinders. I stuck my fingers into the ports, and I could feel the bump they cast into port, feels like a semi-venturi right before the injectors.

If all I am going to do is remove them to polish the ports, then I won't bother. If I can get some worthwhile gains by match porting and polishing, then I will go ahead with it.

I need more opinions from people who have done the job before.

Depending on your mileage I would take the heads off and do gaskets and studs regardless, i regret not doing it with mine when I did the cam.

Mine has only 100K miles, not much for its age and its a 1994.

The engine runs great, and I was really happy with its performance.

Well if you gasket match inth intake ports, polish the exhaust and blend the bowls (the area under the valves) you could pick up 20-30 hp at the flywheel, I'd guess.

Where you'll really pickup power is in the bowl work, do that, clean up the runners some, and get a nice valve job and you'll be glad you did it.

Thats really good work. What gaskets did you use for the intake and exhaust?

I ordered http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PHP-66031/ for the headers and http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEL-MS95580/ for the intake.

If your portmatching you will also benifit from taking some metal out at the pushrod pinch. There is some material there that can be removed thats normally worth 8 or 10 CFM. Just know how thick it is and dont go overboard.

Places where I feel are not too beefy, I will just blend and smoothen out. Others, I will deal with them accordingly.

I just need to know if the gaskets I big enough for the match porting.

When I removed the intake, there were black patches around the ports and you can tell how much I can remove. The gaskets I removed were also Fel-Pro.

i used polishing stones. they are pink stones (ill try and find the website, its saved in my fav on my laptop and im at work) and i use an air grinder the one where the bit sits ontop almost like a dremel. hell i suppose if you have the right bit you could use a dremel. ill post pics up this weekend or send them to you so you can see how i did mine. im pretty happy how they turned out...... DING lemme check my photobucket i might have some on there.

http://www.eastwood.com/engine-porting-kit.html

heres and idea this kit will work but i use the carbide bits which are on that page ill post the link under this. i use the carbide bits to get all the edges cleaned up and what not but then i use pink stones which makes the surface smoother its more of a polishing stone instead of grinding.

heres the page the carbide bits are on the right
