Default Another rear main leak thread on fresh 383 build, sucks, whatever

So i just got done building my 383, everything seemed great but I am leaking a pretty decent amount of oil from the rear main, checked behind the intake manifold and doesn't feel like there is any oil there.

I see droplets from the bellhousing inspection plate, not even 10 miles on this thing.

I had this problem the first time the 383 was built and I also had blue smoke from the exhaust.

this time the only problem I have is the rear main leak and I built this thing myself. Even replaced the rear main twice since the first time I thought I messed it up and redid it with a new rear main. still leaking.

I feel like I am going to have to take the hit and have someone replace it for like 300, I really don't feel like going through the work and hassle myself, especially after months of slaving away to get this thing running right and having this stupid leak.

just felt like venting. pissed off right now.

I used the teflon one, pretty sure I installed it dry.

I had the same issue man, but mine was excessive crankcase pressure. I was running a large cam and the pressure was getting too much and it blew the rear main out. Running two breathers now and it seemed to have fixed it.

wondering if that could be my problem, if i add another breather to the other side, will it take care of this leak issue? or does the rear main still need to be redone if the pressure problem is fixed with another breather?

if that is my problem, should I not drive it and get another breather placed in tomorrow.

I am tempted to take it to the gym anyways since I wanted to rip on it on the highway tonight or is that a bad idea? can it blow out the seal more IF that is the problem?

large cam = too much crankcase pressure?

well lets say it isn't the cam, but just crankcase pressure in general, is a 2nd breather on the other valve cover a possible fix?

I thought I had a rear mail leak, but it turned out to be the back of the intake manifold even though it appeared dry. Before tearing into the rear main, I'd check the intake manifold because its the easier of the two jobs.

anyways, I still need to try to figure out why my main is leaking, maybe something else is causing it.

so back to my question, could it be high crankcase pressure? and if so would a second breather fix the problem or is the main seal done and needs replacement?

I am worried I may pay someone to change it out and the same problem might persist if something else is causing it.

like I said, my last 383 build a few years ago had the same rear main leak and it took me 3 years to get the motor done again and running, and I have the stupid leak still.

if you have a breather already, it probably won't do much good unless you left the plastic wrap on it. If you're only running the factory pcv system that could be your problem, but I doubt it. Hell it'll only cost you a valve cover to try! While you're in there replacing the rear main seal, you might as well replace the crankshaft seal

My $02 if you replace the real seal go with the rubber FelPro...not Teflon one.

grease it up...I also use the install tool which makes it very easy to install.

the gasket for the rear main seal housing "could" be the source of leak also. I used a dye kit to pin point what I thought was a pan gasket leak and it turned out to be the gasket between rear main seal housing and block...PIA

Mines doing the same **** and that's after getting it back from the machine shop. I had roughly 100 miles on it and had a few drops here and there, oil spread on the ground does tend to look like a alot more than it is but still right a f***ing leak! I since changed the pan and put a new after market pan and new gasket on and mine still leaks. I've always heard that 350's where notorise for leaking. Hell I dont know what to do either, except take the SOB apart again and seal the **** out of it with something????

I installed the rubber Felpro dry. Not one hint of a leak.

If all else fails though and your rear main seal is fine, looks like you're going to have to hunker down and do the crank seal too.

the "teflon" rear main seal yes install dry....they also make the standard rubber one that you lube up just like a OEM rear main seal
