Default Head Discussion 396 LT1

Just wanted to ask a few questions about different head combonations on my 396.

BEFORE I START, yes this is a golen motor, and yes it makes the power it was advertised, lol.

now that thats cleared up, theres a pretty nice set of 195cc trickflows on here, and i dont believe that the runner was opened up at all. the valves are 2.02 and 1.60. pretty sure they flow around 280 @ .600, cam is a 236/244 .570 lift XE lobes.

a few friends were pretty convinced that with no other changes (maybe some more intake work) that with a better set of heads, like a 220CC dart or AFR that i would pick up HP and TQ everywhere in the powerband.

can anyone enlighten me? right now the car makes 410 RWHP unlocked with 4.10 gears and a single 3" exhaust, at 6300 RPM. Torque is funky due to converter flash but its completely flat.

hmmm this car sounds like a friend of mines car lol..............those 195cc trickflows i had on my 355 rob....they flowed 265 out of the box @.600.....there a great platform for work but they may slow your car down or not do anyting at all not to mention your going to loose compression becuase of the 62cc chamber vs. the stock chamber. The afr's are definatly a good way to go as well as some of the aftermarket ported castings out there.......hell you may even want to wait till the winter and there may be a set of AI 215cc CNC heads for sale right in cranston......word on the street has it AI is comming out with a bigger Dart head I may try out.

However as for that car making more power, I know its going against "the evan theory" but I think the car could use more cam. I almost that same cam in my 355 an you've got another 40 cubes on that motor!!! I'd jump up to a high 240 low 250 cam with low .600 lift and like a 110LSA in that car if it were me. I know that car would definatly pick up more power with a better cam in it, if it were me I'd do that, cause im telling you now if you put more cylinder head on that car it will get faster but you wont be taking advantage of it becuase then the cam will absolutly be way to small.

i figured you would hop in V, i understand the cam is small but i sort of like making peak power early you know, saves the motor as a whole. your heads would be overkill for my car man lol ill never have a .700 lift cam haha.

I believe one of my friends has used AFR 210 Comp ported or Race ported (Don't remember which ones) for sale for a pretty damn good deal. I'll check with him and get back to you

ok you have trickflows on there now? your wording is kinda weird. that head is pretty small for a 396, i'd look for at least a ~215cc head. 396 is going to want about 10 degrees more duration to start making some power like quick95 mentioned. it's under valved and overlap will help it. if you keep the lsa tighter and icl earlier you wont have to turn any more rpm than you already are but will make more power. you've got alot of cubes so you dont need to wring it out like a 355, but you need to give it what a big cube motor wants.

I think you need a large CC head that wont drop your compression so much.

The TFS 215cc or a AFR 220cc head would help feed that big motor, but you are probably going to need a different intake, and a custom cam to really take advantage of the better/bigger heads.

So if your willing to drop the coin on a new topend theres lots more power to be had but it will come at a price....

yes the heads on the car now at 195cc trickflows that were ported, also w a 5 angle valve job, milled. valves are 2.02 and 1.60. the motor is 11.7 : 1 compression.

yeah, rethinking this ill need to drop some serious money, hmmm...

im with you on this on wicked......if he puts the correctly disigned cam in there he can make alot more power and keep it under 6500 at the same time.
