Strange 12 or 9
6 speed car that gets the **** launched out of it.
I keep hearing the 12 bolt will pick up gear whine due to case deflection. Who is running one in a 6 speed?
Not really interested in a S60 or anything Moser .
It's between a strange 12 or 9 right now.

Well my vote would be for S60 but i'm kinda partial lol but definitely 9" over 12 bolt...I have a friend who went through 3 12 bolts on a h/c ls1 and as people have said you'll pick up gear whine after a few hard launches....weight really isnt a huge concern for me plus its over the rear wheels so what better place to have extra weight and I wanted the piece of mind that my rear would hold up from anything i decide to throw at it in the future cuz I got tired of breaking 10 bolts

Less drive train loss thru the 12 bolt, but the 9 is much easier to do gear swaps with being able to have a different carrier with them already on. If you track and street the beast then a 9" is best.

I'm not sure if the Strange 12 bolt is the same design as the Moser 12 bolt where the torque arm bolts do not pass through the housing but bolt from top and bottom. That was one of the factors I looked at when I picked the Moser 9 inch. Heard of lots of people having TQ arm bolts work themselves loose on the 12 bolts.

Those having their gears start whining after some hard launches could be due to not having enough bearing preload in the pinion or carrier bearings. If the gears cannot move from where they were set up, and they are not run excessively low on fluid or excessively worn, there is no reason they should go from being quiet to whining badly.
No matter what rear end you get, you will probably have at least a noticable amount of whine. Depends on how well you can hear and how loud your exhaust it. Most aftermarket gears just plain aren't quite as quiet as aftermarket ones.
I have a 12 bolt with a spool and I thought about switching to a Detroit Locker. After doing some research, it seems that would be about the only differential that could take a hard M6 launch. After doing more research, it seems that with all the unlocking, locking, ratcheting, and clunking of the Detroit Locker, it would be more bothersome and more of a pain in the *** than the spool. That is heresay from the internet too though. I have not had an opportunity to ride in a stick car equipped with a Detroit.
The only time my spool bothers me, is when the motor is out of the car and I have to move it. It's hard to push when not going straight! LOL. That said, the tires on the car do make a difference. At first I had Nitto drag radials on the car with WS6 wheels, and going very slow while turning (turning into a parking spot for example) it would rattle the car.
Later I had some Mickey Thompson ET street radials in the same size, on the same WS6 wheels and the car didn't rattle at all. You could just feel it binding a little. Same way with my Draglites and my 28" ET Drags.
I'm going to stick with the spool. I have come to like it, and it sure won't break
