Default new to the forum...but need help

new around here so bare with me...ok, bought a 97 ws6 lt1 TA a few weeks ago.the guy that had it had put in a lt1 out of a vette. it ran ok but was kinda sluggish and was NEVER taken care of motor wise. things I've done...coolant flush, 160 tstat, AIR delete. now, i started getting gas in the oil and smoke from the dipstick tube and filler cap, but thats it...i pulled the heads off to see if i could see any damage with the valves and figured it needed new gaskets anyways for as old as it is. the valves were good and pushrods and lifters. IM is good and clean now. new spark plugs. hollowed cat. now heres the problem...when i go to start it, itll only start with me pushing the gas and when it is running, it sounds like *** and is struggling. i have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running as well. it used to do this as well before it had issues but would go away after it warmed up. i havent done a compression test or fuel pressure test yet. but i know its getting spark and fuel, just almost seems like its getting too much fuel. actually i know it is. right before i tore into it, it used 4 gals of gas and got me 35 miles. there ya go, any advice would be great since im sure someone has had this issue fuel regulator maybe?

Any codes? When you pulled the heads did you get all of the vacuum lines hooked back up? How about the plug wires are they all going to the correct cylinders?

IMO the motor prob didnt "come outta a vett" especially if it wasnt cared for... The vetts had lt.'s so did these cars only difference is some vetts got 4bolt mains and/or lt4 upper goodies. Was that the magic selling point for u

the plugs didnt look too bad. the wires are on the correct plugs. no codes, even now. i checked the injectors, they are all good. only thing i can figure next would be the fuel regulator. the pump is working. and i tried with vacuum on the regulator and with it disconnected, same results

Ehhh... Tried what with the reg disconnected? Driving it around?? Lol didn't idle worth a **** did it? Pull the vac line off after running it and see if it has fuel in .. It shouldn't, do a fuel system pressure check.

I would run a compression test and make sure you are getting a good strong spark to all of the plugs.

Btw if your getting "gas in the oil" DO NOT continue to run it as you will wash the rings and find out where your fuel is going.

and i know where the fuel was going, into my crankcase. but after cleaning the heads, i believe one or more of the valves were stuck open with gunk. not getting any gas in there now

Do a fuel system test
43.5 at idle, 45-47 at idle with reg line disconnected and plugged at manifold
