Default New personal best...If only I could launch the M6.

Let me put this into context before the haters take it out of context.
  • I dont race.
  • Dont want to race.
  • Just want a fast fun hobby car I can play with and spend money on.
  • Third time I have ever run at the strip EVER and second time with this Camaro.
  • Its a stick.
  • I cant launch the stick worth a **** and best 60' is 1.99 seconds.
  • Weight with me in it is 4050 pounds.
  • My goal from day one was a mid 12 second car.
Now thats out of the way.

I went to the local strip today just to make some runs and overall was very pleased because I have now reached my goal. Last time I went was 2.5 years ago and it did horrible mainly do to inability of me to really drive the car well and I burned up the ring and pinion. This time the engine ran really strong and I destroyed two out of three 3V Mustang GT's but the third Fox body sucked my paint off with a blistering 9 second run.

Best run was:
12.52 ET
112.12 MPH
1.99 60'

I just cant launch the stick to get a decent 60' time and it seems obvious that the car can do low 12's with a decent driver. Anyone on this board could likely drive it better than I can lol.

The best launch I had was dumping it 4K RPM and I am now fully convinced of what I have read on the board regarding the difficulty of launching a stick car. Oh well, maybe I will give it another try in a few more years.

So someone tell me how to launch this car and tell me what it could run with a decent 1.6 60'.

If you are happy with your goal then that is all that matters. With that said, what tires do you run when you take it down the strip? I assume you are running street tires?

With a 1.6 60', I would expect a very low 12 sec run and maybe get lucky to squeek out a 11.9X.

MT drag radials with 32 pounds of air. Also no line lock so I cant make them smoke. I am happy with it but I would go gaga over a low 12 ET.

Way too much air in those tires to be effective. When you go to the track, bleed them down to 16-18psi and they should hook much better. Get some heat in them if you can. A line lock would make things easier if you have trouble doing a brake stand. Before you head home, air them back up and you will be good to go.

You could probably squeeze out a low 12 just by shifting better. You should trap closer to 117 easy.

That car is capable of 11s.

I forgot to take the air tank this time. Last time I did air them down to 18 pounds and the thing bogged horribly out of the hole every single time. I remeber dumping it a 4K and the revs came down to 1.8K and I had to dig out of the hole. Just aint got skills.

Whats a 2 step?

Not too bad considering. I've always dropped the pressure down to 10-12 to start. A line lock will help for the burnout, and I know plenty of guys that use it the launch. But, get the tire nice and sticky and then just drop the pedal and mash the gas. The only weak point you may have is the clutch. But you'll find that out the first time you dump it with the tire warm. I foresee a high 11 in you future once you get the launch down. If you really want to have fun, take enough tools with to disconnect the front sway bar links as well. It'll help put more of the weight to the rear and hook a bit better. Then throw those back on and fill up the tires and drive 'er home. Congrats on a decent time none the less.

A 2 step will allow you to stand on the gas pedal and it'll only rev to a preset rpm. Then all you do is dump the clutch and it will keep you from getting that bog out of the hole.

Launch it at 6k.

I used to launch at 5500 rpms and still bog unless I sprayed immediately.

Don't dump the clutch either. Just let it out, don't slip but don't dump either.

M6's arent the easiest cars to launch, thats for sure. I didnt see that you list any suspension mods, is your suspension pretty much stock? Do you have LCA's and relocation brackets? They help a lot. Also, remove or disconnect the front sway bar, that helps a lot with weight transfer to the rear. I run 255/50/16 MT drs and run around 18 lbs in them. I also have a spohn adjustable body mount t/a. If you're going to run it hard you should really have a body mounted t/a, otherwise you risk breaking the trans. I recently did the clutch line drill mod, supposed to let the clutch drop quicker and speed up releasing for quicker shifting, running it next weekend, want to see how much it helps. My best runs were leaving at 4.5-5k. I'd launch it harder but still on the stock bottom end, dont want to get too crazy with it. I've run mine hundreds of times now, everytime I go it takes me a few runs to really get the feel of launching it. My best times were at small tracks early in the morning where I could hot lap it and get the feel of things before it gets real crowded.

Bias-ply tires, 5500+rpm launches. You do have that pedal part installed also right? I bought one from ya and will never be without it, works. Drag radials can break parts on manual cars. That could be an 11 second car.

I have tubular LCA's, PHR and built in relocation brackets on the Midwest fab 9. The tubular TA mounts to the tranny mount but the shocks and springs are original.

Thanks for the help guys. I might make it back this year and lower the pressure, pull the front SB and maybe buy a line lock.

As already stated get a SLP lineloc and a 2 step, lower your air pressure to 25 psi do your burnout, stage your car set the lineloc and set the 2 step for 4k then just watch the last yellow and leave on it.
