Default What tool for timing cover seal install on LT1

Is there other ways or tools to install the seals in the timing cover in the LT1. We would not like to purchase the kellymoore Jtool if we don't have to, its pretty expensive. If its what we have to do to keep the front from leaking then we'll buy it, but if you guys have any other suggestions, we're all ears...Thanks

There is nothing complicated about them - just put a small amount of grease around the perimeter, make sure the timing cover is nice and clean, then lightly tap them in with a block of wood and a small hammer. They will fall right into place evenly without any fuss.

I just changed the seals in an LT1 timing cover for the third time, its a cake walk.

I've always installed mine dry, no leaks. Personal preference maybe?

Instructions with the FelPro kit say to use a "thin coat of lubricant, such as grease" prior to installing.

SBC distributer shaft seals are supposed to be installed dry though.

I'm sure there would be no issue either way on an LT1.

You can also use a vice and a couple blocks of wood to squeeze them in. Also I put the seals in the freezer for a hour or so before installation, dont know if it helps, but it cant hurt. Ken

As stated a piece of wood and a hammer or something similar. Works like a charm everytime.

Oh yea, the seal portions are supposed to go on dry.

The thin layer of grease around the perimeter prevents the soft metal from marring, makes it easier to seat it evenly, and makes removal easier down the road.
