Default cam selection help..

this is my first time dealing with and posting in the LT1 section so easy on me . long story short we just got a LT1 out of the police impound for 1K, 94 M6 convertible LT1, looks and feels awesome but has a tiny gasket leak. so its rebuilding time. my friend owns the work shop so labor cost is zero. question is am wanting to cam this engine while its out, this is going to be a daily driver with track races may be. what do you suggest for a cam selection? id like to keep my ac ALL the time and still drive it on the street. oh and a full exhuast not going anytime soon! just want something to have fun with for a while with stock exhaust. and what parts to upgrade along with the cam on LT1. thanks

I just got done with a cam swap I also redid my heads the normal valve job and resurfaced then I ment with a mild cam kinda a baby cam called cc502 but they have a cc503 that sounds pretty common
To answer your second question you with need new water pump gasket an timing chain , timing chain gasket, intake gasket, I would upgrade valve springs and maybe a set of 1.6 roller rockers and maybe even new push rods

Have you tried looking at AI site yet or LE. They can give you a cam for your needs. You cant go wrong with the hot cam kit. Not many ppl here will praise it but it's tried and proven

If your going to upgrade the cam, even if it is a small street cam, I would upgrade the Springs, Rockers and maybe even the pushrods as well. The stock springs are only rated to like .490 lift and any aftermarket cam regardless of how small is going to push that number...just because the springs are rated to .490 does NOT mean you can put a cam with .489 lift onto them...You have to make sure there is room left when the springs are compressed.

If I were you, keep your spring lift about .030 ABOVE what your cam lift will be and get new springs...upgrade to a set of 1.6 Roller Rockers...and throw on a set of hardened pushrods. Hell while your at it maybe even upgrade the lifters to some LS7's! Better safe and do it now than wait and break something...

Just my .02

You won't gain much from a cam change if you're running the stock exhaust and manifolds.
I'm not telling you to NOT cam it, but just understand you won't see much performance from a cam change until you go to headers and a free flowing exhaust.
If you do it, I'd go with something very conservative like the LPE 211/219 or similar, which is still enough to be a good performer when you upgrade the exhaust.

thanks for the replies guys am aware of the valve springs. never go cheap on that one lol. reason for having stock exhaust is that its VERY hard to get longs tubes in middle east specially for LT1's and since the engine is out its a very good time to cam it 211/219 seems a good choice for a daily driver i will look into that one. thanks

also if youre gonna change the timing chain, replace the cam and crank sprockets. Theyre not that expensive. As everyone mentioned, springs are a must, and between the cc502 and cc503, id personally go for the 503. More power for the same price.
