Default Bought a 96 SS Camaro... What to do w/ 2k

I just bought a 1996 Camaro SS LT1 with a Auto. The car is straight and is completely stock with 135k on it. It runs great and pulls hard. The auto shifts great and was rebuilt as 95k by a dealer.

This is a budget build of mine and I was wondering what you guys recomend? I can do the installs myself so I know that will save a lot.

2K spending...

I want the car to be a fun drag car/ driver... It is not my only car so i am not affraid to break it

How much nitrous can it take safely? Original engine... It has the 3.23 gear option and I was wondering would be worth doing a 3.73?

Also is the stock SLP exhaust worth keeping with long tubes and ory pipe? Does it sound good? I like the look of the stock exhaust.

Here is a dirty pic of what it looks like as I got it. Im getting the Bumpers, hood, and decklid repainted... Goes in tomorrow for that. Not part of the budget 2k.

Thanks for the info.

I was looking in the classifieds and saw some good suspension stuff I was gonna make a call on. Is the 10 bolt complete junk or can i get away with doing gears and running it for a while?

Thanks

It's a ticking time bomb. Your fairly safe now with a stock car and automatic. But you start adding power and sticky tires it will break.

You can do it, takes a good bit of power to break one in an A4. I would take the money and buy an O/R Y + LT's, hook it up to the awesome stock 2OTL catback, then get a dyno tune. After that I would just get some good tint on it, get some lowering springs, shocks and possibly some quality sticky performance tires if you can squeeze that in there. Awesome looking car BTW, I love those.

Seeing how you have a auto I wouldn't worry about your rear end too much, plus you said your not worried about breaking stuff so I couldn't replace it seeing how its not broken. I agree with orange, a stall and LTs with o/r y sounds like a good start. I don't know much about the stock cat-back someone else might be able to charm in on that. Maybe the Lt1 section would be a better place to ask.

^^It's a good catback, sounds awesome and it's a straight through design that is said to actually flow very well, I would keep it if I were the OP.

Ordered Air Foil, 160' thermostat, 4 emails out on used long tubes and Y pipe. Eyeing suspension parts in forsale section... Thinking of powdercoating wheels black (200.00) and tinting windows while out getting paint work done. Also ordered window motors.

How much slower with auto X suspension make this thing vs Drag in the 1/4 mile?

If it has Level II suspension, leave the rear shocks and all springs in the car. Put some good LCA's and relocation brackets in, tubular/chassis mount torque arm and a one way adjustable shock along with a good rear tire like a QTP or ET Street. I run 27X15" QTP's and above is what I've done and have been running 1.55 to 1.65 60' times in a manual. I have Koni one-way adjustable shocks which are on the loosest rebound setting yet the car still handles like a champ around corners.

That's a nice lookin' Hardtop.
I think with 135k on it unless you know the maint history you should give it a good tune up. Opti or cap and rotor, plugs, wires, o2 sensors and maybe a new water pump to protect the opti. These items are going to run around $700. Then headers, cai and tune will get you started, you'll still have some left of your 2k but it goes fast.

Suspension, long tubes, tune. 3.73 should be a good bump. My 30th came with 2.73!!! Can't wait to swap in the 3.73's

It won't be slower at all if you pick the right suspension components; should improve quite a bit actually...unless you are comparing it to a drag specific setup with drag launch springs and shocks....then the difference will be huge on the track; .5 sec or more probably.

I have lowering springs, subframe connectors, boxed control arms, panhard bar, LCA relocation brackets (auto x setup) and it hooks up much better than stock. Drag launch springs dramatically improve launches, but the car won't handle for **** around a road course.

subframe connectors, lower control arms, lower control arm relocation brackets, torque arm that doesnt mount to the transmission, sway bars, and 100 shot of nitrous. as long as you dont have drag radials or slicks on the car, the rear should last a while as long as you dont do the 373's. thats when they break.
