Default stupid oil pan!!!

I'm in the process of removing the oil pan and at this point I'm considering removing the steering gear assembly to gain more clearance b/c the engine won't lift more than 1" before the engine hangs up on something.

Anyone else have to go to great lengths to remove the pan?

Lower the k-member a couple of inches using the 6 big bolts. No need to touch the steering.

Oh yeah... DUH! Good idea! Looks like I'll be renting a cherry picker this weekend. I tried a simple lift on the crank snout after pulling the motor mount bolts. But stopped when it wouldn't budge past an inch or so. The manual says to lift the engine 3" for clearance to remove the pan.

I'll look for a write up (haven't done it before), but I assume the procedure includes removing the shock tower bolts as well.

k-member to body = 4 bolts
shock tower mount = 2 bolts ???

Never mind... just found a post with a good write that describes 6 cradle bolts. Guess I'll have to wait until I get home tonight to play "where's Waldo" with the k-mbr bolts. But still hard to visual lowering the k-mbr and not touching the shock tower bolts.

Just place a floor jack under the bell housing to raise the motor. It will clear the pan. Done it numerous times.

For me, I couldn't get my pan completely off unless it was at TDC #1. The pan would come back and like hang, then I figured out it was hanging on the crank, so I spun it to TDC #1 and it came out.

Don't forget to disconnect your coolant lines! If you raise the motor too high you can bust the radiator housing for the return line.
