Driving down the highway and then boom! UPDATE on pg 3.Car starts but wont stay on!
Ok guys i have a 93 lt1 auto with 150k miles. So i was driving down the highway going about 70 and then i hear a back fire sound but louder! then i notice my cars shuts off,so i go over to the slow lane and just ride for a few yards and then another boom and thats when i pull over. wait a few mins try starting and nothing. cranks but doesnt turn on,oils good ddnt overheat.
my thought are 1. timing belt 2.fuel problems 3.spark problems (opti) 4.head block.
any inputs on what it can be before i start pulling stuff apart would be really appreciated!

Peek in the oil filler cap while a friend tries to turn it over and see if the rocker arms are moving. If they're moving the chain isn't broken. It still may have jumped time but usually anything that goes "Boom" isn't good.
That dates back to my childhood when Mom told me "Baby fall down....go Boom". It wasn't good then and it's no good now.

i've had them do that, and i've had them do nothing at all....kind of like when a timing belt breaks.
one easy way to tell......
1)take keys out of ignition
2)safely lift nose of the car(if necessary)
3)get a socket on the crank snout.
4)turn the crank about 30 degrees in the direction of normal rotation
4)now slowly turn the engine opposite. what you will be doing here, is feeling for the slack in the chain to be taken up. you shouldn't be able to turn backwards any more than 10 degrees(and even that is a lot) before you feel the slack tighten up.
if you turn it a lot before feeling that, you've got a skipped chain.

i havent checked it out yet because of the weather being in the low 30s,but if it is the timing, would it be easier just to pull the whole motor out?? and while add it change the opti water pump? seems alot of work though
EDIT: Just went outside and did a spark test and i have NO spark so forshure its the opti!

I'm having a hard time understanding what's you're trying to say. It's probably just me because hillbilly is my first language. If you just went outside forshure and had spark....where did you have the spark? Was it at a plug wire or the coil wire.
I'm just guessing here but maybe you should get someone to come over and give you a hand. If you have spark at the coil wire then it's probably a cap and rotor issue and that's not too bad of a job. Many people do change the Opti water pump while they're in there. 150,000 miles and it's about time.
If you have spark at the coil wire then the low voltage side of the opti is working. Do you have any spark at the spark plugs? That would be your next test.

Need to do a little more to rule out a bad coil, ICM or even just a bad opti harness but it dose sound like the opti may have died. Before spending the money head over shbox.com and due some of the tests on those parts to make sure it's not just a 50 dollar coil or 100 dollar ICM or even a 40 dollar opti harness.
