Default Recurring Power Steering Woes

I had to change my power steering pump after my cheapo harbor freight puller pin got stuck in the old one (literally would not come out. Automotive equivalent to Excalibur.) Before the pump swap it ran great, no noises. I have bled the new pump a billion times and the noise will not go away. It whines like crazy. I flushed the system twice and it's a bit better, but it still whines. Does this even on a cold start up.

Any ideas? There are no leaks to my knowledge. The fluid level does not move, nor do I see and bubbles in the reservoir.

Really? Dealer only or what? The stuff I originally took out wasn't green and I didn't have any issues.

I disagree with the "green GM fluid only" statement. My pump has been using red fluid for over 50,000 miles, stock pump and no problems.

x2 on this. My car has had ATF in it since I put it back together last year. No issues. My old 94 TA got the same treatment too.

How are you bleeding the system? If the fluid level isn't moving you may have a kinked line or twisted it wrong when reinstalling. How does the steering feel? Like it did before? Heavier?

Your lucky. Can't tell you how many have been through my shop with whining pumps, many would **** fluid out the vent hole in the filler cap on very cold morning, that somebody had put red transmission fluid in them. That is what was used in power steering pumps in old vehicles. Both Ford (uses a lot of GM built steering components) & GM changed to lighter weight green fluid in the mid '70s. We fixed many of those vehicles by dumping & replacing the power steering fluid with the proper fluid. You can buy green power steering fluid for GM & Fords at NAPA, etc, auto parts stores.

I fill it, put the car in the air and do 20-30 full turns of the wheel with the car off. Put the car on the ground and let it idle for 3 minutes, then do 20 more full turns.

I might try out the gm fluid.

A tech at the Chevy dealer is who told me about it originally. Shows up more when it's cold weather. If it foams up, that's probably what's wrong. Red fluid is heavier viscosity. It fixed every one that came in moaning, foaming & pissing fluid on cold starts.
