24x with a twist question
I have an extra LT1 intake and a obd 2 timing cover. Does anyone know if the LT1 timing cover could be used for a 24x conversion on an older small block. I know I can mod the manifold for bolt holes and coolant routing. but dont want to have to do a dist hole. any help would be appreciated.

I cant afford the timing cover that EFI connection sells, and the vortec timing cover would require that a distributor hole be bored in the LT1 intake, and I am trying to avoid that. I have a 1 piece rear main block that utilizes the same pan gasket as the LT1, so what is different about the timing cover, is it the bolt mounting pattern?

There were 3 editions of the LT1 timing cover super. The first one was '93-'94, second '95, third '96-'97. Its the '97 one with a crank position sensor hole is the one u want. The sensor goes in low at an angle to the crank sprocket. Heres one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-97-LT1-Ca...-/360834881881.
Hope this helps,

Oh geeze, my bad super. But the older sbc covers with the crank sensor are even easier to come by. Just google "chevy vortec timing cover" and choose your match. And EFI connection has them brand new for 50 bucks - scroll to bottom of page: http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonn...uretedSBC.aspx
sorry for the misread but hey i dont get paid for this ya know,

I live in Rowell, NM. there is no such thing as a competent machine shop within 500 miles. you cant even get a set of heads surfaced properly here. already had a set of heads ruined by one of the local shops. and a friend had a block stolen and resold by another one, though he got the machinist fired. As he had marked his block. and another friend bought it. thats why I was hoping to modify the LT1 cover to do a 24x conversion on my old TBI pickup. thanks for all the help.

I know this may not be much help. But you could sell the Lt1 intake and cover which the cover is pretty desirable. And buy a TPI intake and then run the distributor setup the 24x sells. I know a lot of guys like the TPI intakes on the truck.

well I have considered that, but used LT1 intakes are about $40 here, and the cheapest TPI intake I have found is on ebay for $175 right now. waiting to see how high it goes. there is nothing locally available here. the perils of a small town. may have to stick with TBI like it or not.

One option is to use a vortec timing cover, and just skip the distributor all together. As far as I can tell, the cam sensor is used for 3 things: Misfire detection, faster startup and sequential fuel injection. If you can deal with diagnosing your own misfires, deal with a fraction of a second longer start up, and deal with the pcm firing injectors in "batch" mode, you'll be good to go. You're ignition timing will not be affected if you don't run a cam sensor.

The conversion I am doing is for torque and fuel economy, I want the cam sensor installed, so I purchased a TPI intake setup and will order the 24x small block kit from EFI connection and the diy LT1 harness kit from BP auto, and use the factory TBI, and extra vette LT1 harnesses I have to fabricate the 24x harness for my truck. I pull a 32 ft camper with this truck and I need better fuel mileage.
