There's nothing I hate more than fighting with a slushbox automatic. It never does what I want it to do. If it's a dedicated drag car then yeah, get the LS1 A4. But for the street, autox, road racing, and all other shenanigans there's no option but a 6 speed IMO. It's more fun to be in control.
That and my grandmom can't drive it.

depends on what you like man. i've had an lt1 6speed and lt1 a4. love both of em. ls1 motors are by far pretty crazy, but i like having an lt1 because you dont see as many of them around, and looking forward to building mine up to whip and ls1

6spd is cooler and more rare, and able to handle abuse and high hp more reliably than an auto, gotta love the 450lb-ft torque rating of the t-56 and wide spread of ratios to choose from. Something like 75% of V8 Camaros/Firebirds are autos which has always baffled me As mentioned, a 6spd can do a lot more enthusiastic driving an auto just cannot compete; auto x, road-course, drifting, and just plain hooliganism, rather than just go fast in a straight line and not have to shift in traffic. Also the Europeans and other parts of the world mock us "lazy Americans" for our strong preference for self shifting transmissions
All that said, the LS1 is a gem of a motor and superior to the LT1 in most every way. Personally, I'd stick with the 6spd simply for the fun to drive factor, these cars are meant to be "toys" not commuter appliances, if you want a commuter car, get a Camry! Auto's are only good for dedicated drag cars IMHO; or anything with 4 doors or more.

Any year 4th gen Firebird/TA looks better than any 4th gen Camaro IMO....not to mention they are more rare and collectable since Pontiac is an orphan brand and lower production numbers, that is a fact, not an opinion. Get a Firehawk if you want a car that will actually appreciate in value down the road and has great handling to boot, they made less than 1000 of them a year, some years just a few hundred; significantly fewer than SLP SS Camaros making them prime collector cars, that's the main reason I scooped up my 2nd 4th gen several years ago, it holds value better and the level 2 suspension with Bilstein shocks make it ride MUCH smoother than a regular WS6/TA/formula...plus it already comes with SLP exhaust, ram air, hurst shifter, auburn diff, ect. that stuff adds up real quick if you buy it piece by piece.

Tough choice....the LT1/LT4 SS's are meaner looking and more rare than later model SS's and better sounding, BUT the LS1 is so much more superior and easier to tune/mod, more reliable, ect...if you are going to leave it stock I'd get the LT1 it will be worth more that way, if you are going to heavily mod it, go LS and don't look back.

Your car will be a lot more fun to drive. But if you want something that with potential to go fast one day, the LS1 is exponentially better. After you start modifying it, you could always just throw in a 480LE/TH400 with a full manual valve body (and a transbrake if you want to go all out), and it'll be reasonably fun to drive... Still no clutch pedal, but it'll be similar to driving a manual with a sequential gearbox (after the start). Personally, I'd go with the LS1 and never look back.

There's so much more to driving these cars than in a straight line. With a few suspension mods and some tweaking they handle surprisingly well when the roads get twisty. You can really dial in the power with your right foot and a manual trans depending on how your car is setup. The automatic takes most of that fun away because you'll spend more time fighting with it rather than concentrating on what's in front of you. It's not telepathic, it can only follow the set parameters in the tune which isn't ideal. A sudden downshift and too much gas mid corner will wrap you around a tree.
By the time you dumped all of that money into an automatic you could have just T56 swapped it which is $$$. Buy the stick car now and if you're not satisfied with the LT1 then swap it for something better like a LQ9.

My LT1 put down 307/340 and went 8.60 on street tires
My LS1 put down 340/344 locked and went 8.0 on street tires
Both have the same gear (373), similar mods and a tune. The stall in my LS is complete garbage (tci street fighter) and the tranny was on its last leg.
The LT1 is set up to turn so yes it will definitely smoke the LS in the curves

I have two Camaros. A 97 lt1 A4 and 2000 Camaro SS M6 for my personal taste and I like the automatic transmission for the "traffic" factor. I hate be using the clutch pedal in heavy traffic. The Camaro A4 have a Yank 3200 converter and is a tremendous product.
