Default Anyone ever have the water pump drive gear break?

So on my way to the store Saturday check gauges light came on.. look down temp is approaching 260. Kill it immediately and pulled it apart on sunday thinking thermostat. Tested fine so yanked the water pump to find the drive sticking out the timing cover not spinning when the motor was turned over. And can turn the drive a good half turn each way by hand before it stopped.

Any one have something like this happen? Don't remember reading anything like this happening.

Here's a recent thread on the subject, no definitive answer as to why though.

I did a couple months ago, on a fresh 383 forged, new water pump, but it was actually the water pump shaft, the drive was fine. Didn't have 100 miles on it, replaced pump been good ever sense, although I did upgrade the harmonic balancer.
