Default Lunati cam choice for my LT1

Cant decide on what cam to go with but am thinking I want something in this range 227/234 range since I have 3.73 gears. I like the specs of some of the Lunati cams but have found no one seems to have ever used them except maybe the Voodoo cams. I found this one on there site. I have a set of LT4 heads and LT4 intake that will be going on the engine. I thought about the Hotcam but want something bigger on the intake side. I also like the Comp 503. My bottom end is stock. I ran 14.1 @ 101 with my current mods in my sig. Looking to get in the high 12s.

From there site: Street/Strip Hydraulic roller LT1
These cams produce excellent power in mild to higher performance street and strip applications when moderate engine modifications have been made with proper gearing.Hydraulic Roller Cam. Good for high performance street use. Good increase in mid and upper RPM torque and HP. Fair idle.

Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 298/286
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/234
Gross Valve Lift 1.5 rockers (Int/Exh): .478/.480
LSA/ICL: 112/108
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 2000-6400
Includes: Cam Only

Part Number: 20080561
Previous Part Number: 54761LUN

The intake lobe is extremely lazy, the overlap is big (and it's huge from a long intake ramp, not exhaust) this means you'll need more RPM but have less scavenging. You'll need to rev this to the PCM limit and it still might not be high enough.

Why don't you have AI or LE spec you a cam for your build? The cams they'll spec you will fit your wants much better than a shelf cam.

That may be the way to go with one of LE cams. I was hoping the Lunati would be stronger than the hotcam and just as potent as the CC503 if not a tad stronger on the top end pull with slightly bigger duration. But after comparing the Lunati against other cams of the same or close in size the lift seems a little on the low side. Even with 1.6 rockers its only .511

I dont want to rev it to the moon either, max I would feel comfortable would be 6200 rpm especially with a stock bottom end. Maybe I will call one of the Lunati techs and see what they recomend or better yet talk with Loyd Elliot and see what he says. Thanks for your input.

The cc503 will get you into the high 12s no problem. I've ran a 12.7@114mph with a awful 2.x 60'.

I'm currently preparing to do a complete rebuild of my 92 LT-1 motor and have exchanged numerous emails with Lloyd regarding head/intake work and cam choice. He is very responsive to the types of questions you are grappling with, so you can count on him to be helpful when it comes to recommendations. One question ... is your car an A4 or M6 tranny? Since you are running 3.73 gears, you can almost certainly use a cam that is stronger than the "hot cam". Lloyd will point you in the right direction.

Thanks Wheel stander I will send him a email. I got a M6 tranny which now alot of people said I should go with 4.10 s. I bought the car with the 3.73s and the Hooker long tubes. Car has not been tuned so I will do that after the cam swap. Which ever cam that one is going to be. Definitely need to do my homework on the cam choice as I only want to do it one time.

Most can companies have bad rpm ranges listed. With a self imposed 6200rpm limit the HOT is too much duration especially with LT4 heads that just cause higher rpm range as well.

Choosing LT4 heads and asking about a can more than 10degrees too big for your rpm expectation says you are way way off the mark. Stop buying parts you already are headed for a mess, take the time to learn a lot before going any further.

I sent Loyd a email and here was his reply on that lunati 227/234 @ .050 cam:

as far as emissions it will be pretty close to passing.

As far as idle, drivability, RPM range, etc it will be similar to the cam we offer.

The lift is A LOT less so the over all HP/TQ #'s will be less but still run OK.

If using those rockers and needing to pass emissions I would do a 223/230 .565/.565 112 LSA. If you do not need to pass emissions I would use a 226/234 .565/.565 110 LSA cam.

I dont have emissions on my car so I dont have to worry about that. I do Like the custom 226/234 cam he suggested and the lift is much better than the Lunati. Seems like the Lunati 227/234 is decent grind but the low lift holds it back and Loyd says it would run ok. I need to sit back and think on my options. Have Loyd port my LT4 heads/ cam choice/ 1.6 roller rockers type. May have to consider going through the bottom end so it will live with the higher rpms.

I think Lloyd is being a bit gracious saying that Lunati cam will run "ok".
IMO, it's crap compared to the 226/234 cam he offers.

Llyod is a real nice guy and won't bash someones combo. He was definitely being polite, since his cam will make quite a bit more average power while retaining similar manners then the lunati. It's no comparison.

I guess most shelf cams are spec'd with low lift, since they know a lot of cheapskates will try to run them on stock valvetrain parts and cheap knockoff springs and then blame the cam when it grenades.

Ported LT4 heads are only going to exaggerate the rpm discrepancy. I would expect Lloyd's can to go to 6800rpm easily with those.

LT4s are not a good choice particularly for a low rpm intention build.

Very true the LT4 heads will raise the rpms. I also know there is no way a off the shelf cam will run with one of Loyds custom cams. The guy is the guru of the LT1 world and really knows his stuff. Wether the Lunati cam runs good or not I am not going to find out. Way to much labor/ money for me to bank on that cam. I will probably go with a LE cam if not it will be the CC503.

I have seen some of his LT1 head/cam packages run at Atlanta dragway. Very impressive !!! Whats even more impressive is when the guy pops his hood and several are shocked to see its a LT1. I saw a LT1 camaro run low low 12s with the LE1 package/ drag radials. Stock bottom end.

Saw a LE2 LT1 Trans Am run in the high 11s with DRs. M6 too !! The new Mustang GTs stayed away from both cars.

I will bet Lloyd's 223/230 would outperform the lunati 227/234, and stay in your "happy stock bottom end" range. Just because you don't need to pass emissions doesn't mean you should disregard that 223/230, he can grind you something between the 2 if you want, for the same price.

You highlight another big issue, people who don't know what a good result is, if the weather was terrible those are decent times, otherwise they aren't.

No kidding!
I was at ATL just a couple of weeks ago, weighted down to 4000+ lbs and pulled a massive amount of launch timing and some total timing to run 12.0 Index class.

The LE 2 car was a black 96 WS6 Trans Am M6 the other was a white LT1 camaro. This was several weekends ago on a test and tune friday night. Are those bad times for a LE package? I would think low 12s and high 11s are pretty good times. Weather was good when I saw them run... mid 70's.

Also saw a red LT1 Firehawk M6 run in the mid 13's with a just headers and a tune last weekend, which was the last weekend of the year to run for test and tune. It was in the 50's cool and clear. Plus a new mustang GT with a young kid driving it lost control and hit the wall right after the 60 ft mark. I quess he never read the rule when the car is going sideways LET OFF the gas, he was facing the tower when he finally came to a stop. Whole drivers side was smashed.

Wonder how he was going to turn that claim into the insurance company.

Those are not great times for heads/cam LT1s let's leave it at that.

Must have just missed you run. I left right after the mustang got towed off the track. Actually went over and saw it when they dropped it in parking lot. It was ugly.

I got there early, talked with a guy that had a red Firehawk LT1 M6 while we were in the staging lanes. Saw the gray GTR ripping off low 11's . He had 3 Go Pro cameras on his car. Would have stayed later but had to work the next day.
