Default Rebuilding opti spark?

My car rescently started leaking presumably out of the weep hole of the WP, it's been running rough and only getting worse (gambling opti is dying). For the fix I'm swapping to a CSR electric water pump, and apparently attempting to fix the opti situation at the same time. A buddy of mine mentioned a sort of "rebuild kit" so to speak for the distributor from Auto Zone. Said it comes with a optical sensor and whatever else needed for around 100 bucks. Anybody heard and/or done this? I'm trying to gauge what I'm jumping into prior.

He's is prolly speaking of the cap and button. Easliy changed. If it hasnt got to the cam sensor inside it wouldnt be a bad idea to change the cap and button. Ive been putting small amounts of dielectric grease back on the contacts to keep them from getting all that corosion mess back on them when you put it back together. Good luck.

your best bet is to get a new opti from msd get the whole thing don`t just get a cap and rotor you`ll be wasting your time and money

I currently have 65,000 mi. on my stock opti. I changed the cap/rotor about 3 years ago, and cleaned out the housing thoroughly. I'm running just fine. When I reassembled the unit, I "juiced" the OE seal with some RTV, just for insurance.

Step's to rebuild Opti Spark.

Step One...Pull out shot gun and take good aim at old opti.
Step two...Pull trigger and solidly blow away old Opti.
Step Three. Pick up Phone and order new Opti

Best way I have found to rebuild the damn thing!

Some people get lucky. The opti drys out and ends up being ok. If you do have problems just replace it completly.

No this was everything to rebuild the opti internally, no cap and rotor button. I guess it would be a new optical sensor and what not. Figured I'd throw it out there, maybe I got lucky and the opti wont die on me.

OPTI HAS to work for that system to work as well

I would NOT be waiting on a new opti if your way worked

Couldn't agree more. Don't forget to replace the oil seal in the distributor while your at it.

Just the optical sensor not the cap & rotor so if the sensor is good....

How can anyone recommend the MSD when it just came out? It's engineered right from what I've seen, but how hard and long has anyone really run one? It's proven nothing (AFAIK) versus the stock unit.

The Accel Opti, due to the bearing setup, will be worse than the stock unit, but again, nobody has run it enough yet to tell.

Keep us posted on how your setup holds up. The MSD Coil and 6AL often toast the stock opti. If yours does well, that will tell us a lot.

with my stock opti and the MSD ignition and coil it lasted about 45K miles before it went.. it was still running strong when removed but has a slight stutter... so i went ahead and got it outta the way...
