If you plan on keeping the stock computer, you will want to keep the durantion down to a reasonable number. I would say no more than 245deg of duration. This should keep peek hp just under 7200rpms. 7200 is the max you can go with the stock computer.

Too big is a relative term, I think your tolerance for cranky cars is a major consideration.

Go for it use crappy heads and a monster cam and watch the guys with drivable cars walk all over you on the street and strip.

What's wrong with the AFR lt4 195cc heads? i'm not saying your wrong but i've always heard that they are a good set of heads. I plan on matching the cam to heads to get a good overall package, i'm not the type to go put a gm847 in a completly stock engine.

I'd actually like to be a little lower than that, i'd like to have my shift point at right about 6300-6500 rpm. as far as the cam's concerned, what are some of the variables that affect my where my peak power is made, as well as how wide or narrow my power band is?

might want to go 383-396 if you want ot keep the power band that low.

You hear lots of great things about AFR but if you pay attention the results are not there too back it up, particularly with the smaller castings like the 195 and below. Far as I know most of the AFR stuff is ANCIENT gen 1 designs retrofitted to reverse flow cooling. Were good compared to the crappy gen 1 heads but the LT1 s are a BIG step up over OEM gen 1 heads.

AFR is supposed to be completely redesigning their entire lineup, personally too me that is an admission that the older stuff is badly outdated otherwise no compnay will go too a clean slate on their entire product line all at once.

If sticking with a stock shortblock and even most strokers, ported stock castings are about the best choice you can make.

AFR redisgned the gen 1 heads first then they are going to start on the LT's. After working with the LS1/LS2 heads they realized the advantage of the smaller valves. Not that this was new technology, they have had the 5/16" valves for years now. I think that it finally was cost effective for them to switch over to useing all 8mm valves on the SBC's due to the popularity of the LSX heads. Yes they redesigned the shape of the port to match the valve dia.

Although I must say that I have found some great aftermarket heads CNC'd from one of the sponsors web site. TEA has some 200 cc Trick Flow intake runner heads that should be looked at in my opinion. Look at the Stage 3 LT1 GM heads listing. For $2200 they give you a thicker deck surface plus they flow better to make great HP.

I still like the AFR heads but they need to be competitive with their pricing compared to all the CNC heads availible now. I can't wait to see what they come up with on the new Eliminator Competion port heads!!
