I have used several different brands and the Eagle caps required very, very little fitment. You should be able to find them on ebay for about $90. Machine shops vary in price for the line bore & hone.

No, they have to be fitted to the block and then line bored & honed to match the correct main dia.

Not to hijack your thread, but I have a question that's relevant to the topic. I'm ordering some 4 bolt caps *2, 3, and 4* off of summit, most likely the straight bolt milodon caps. On summit it lists them as being large journal, small block chevy, I assume these are the correct ones? The block will be given to the machine shop so they can perform all the work.

What all has to be done to use the splayed caps? I know the block will have to be line bored. But I work in a machine shop(not auto related) and was tempted to buy the caps and install them myself.

Program Engineering caps on mine.... splayed.... I wouldn't use the straight bolt milodon caps... You can do splayed caps for the same price and they are stronger cause they hold the caps laterally in addition to vertically....

My conversion cost like $450 including the line bore and hone....

Not unless you have a 400 block. The large journal caps will not work on a 350 block. The 400 has a larger main journal than the 350. I'm sure your machinist would catch this, well he would have no choice not to.

Good luck,
Dave

Im also using ProGrams.

To add to what OutlawZ said above: The splayed caps are also stronger because the two new bolts/studs get threaded into a thicker part of the block. Ive been told by many that the straight bolt conversion caps will actually weaken the block as the new bolts are threaded into a thinner part of the webbing.

I've converted blocks with the Eagle, Oliver and Pro Gram and I think the Pro Gram is the best.

It cost me about $450 to get the caps square then pined and rough line bored.
then 100-375 to get the line hone. just depends on where you take it.

my engine guy had the caps so perfectly machined into the block you could pick the block up by the caps without the bolts installed.....

here's what it looked like when he was done.....

A lot more depends on the H/C and other components besides the shortblock. Now if they're complaining about the Heads not performing or a longblock, then that's a different story.
