The HOT kit springs are CHEAP and not really suitable for that cam even and that kit does not have lifters. So even the true cost of that kit is over $500 and it is some of the least expensive stuff you can buy for this motor.
Those springs also do not even fit the iron heads if you planned to use those.

think im just going to rebuild the bottom end and leave the heads and valve train alone for now. bore it 30 over and install new pistons, rings, bearings, rods, etc then save up for a nice h/c package

Frankly most local "rebuilds" will just screwup a perfectly good stock shortblock.
Might consider a rebearing but that is about it unless there is specific other damage.

well im going to have to tear it down because the sludge buildup is ridiculous. i also want to check out the crank and bearings and i figure while its apart for $90 i can have it bored so why not.

Plus the cost of getting it cooked/combo with new freeze plugs and cam bearings. Just save up and do it right.

Nevermind I misread your post. I was under the impression that you were just going to have the block bored and try to clean it yourself and reuse all your old freeze plugs and what not. I worked at a machine shop and you would be surprised by the amount of idiots that think they can let that stuff go then come back and say "ohh well I don't really know why my 20 year old freeze plug started leaking"
