Default So they mixed my coolant....

I checked it, and it was brownish (they mixed green with my orange dexcool). So this was 2 weeks ago, I got to draining it today. I drained the radiator and took off the reservior and dumped it. It was all bright orange. I'm guessing they didnt put that much green in or it would be really brown. I washed out the radiator with the hose several times, and did the same to the reservior. Right now I have mostly water and 1/4 a gallon in there as well. I'm going to dump it tomorrow before I start my intake manifold gasket fix.

Think I'm in the clear now? I don't know what happens when you mix the two coolant types, I just know its not good.

just because they mixed colors doesnt mean they hurt it...they do make a green antifreeze that most service shops use now that is safe to use in either.

When I had a coolant flush done after an air bubble incident with dex-cool, they put in a GM approved Dex cool substitute, which was like yellowish brown. Not the bright orange dex cool, but not antifreeze green either. I questioned them about it and they showed me what it was. Its probablly 99% sure they didnt mess anything up, just get your coolant re-filled and re-mixed the way you want and watch it for a few days, you'll probablly be fine.

ahh, i was waiting for merv to get here.

Eh. I like the orange stuff. I already have two gallons ready to be put in.

I flushed the **** out of it for two hours today. I think that might have been enough. I ran it for 20 minutes or so, half of that with the heat on to clean it out in there.

I put in mostly water, and probably two quarts orange antifreeze.

Going to drain it all out tomorrow and put in the good stuff. (the orange)

I guess I'm the Tech now huh..

What ever you use, just make sure it's all the same. I guess they have a clear Mix that can be used with either..

Dex + Green is supposedly the biggest no-no there is. Apparently they form gel crystals and clog up the coolant passages in the motor caused it to overheat.

So, since no one here has mentioned that, I"m not sure what to tell you. I'd be a bit worried and had taken it right back in and told them to flush it all out and put pure <which ever you want> coolant in.

Since its getting warm out try running a mix of royal purples "purple ice" and distilled water. It dropped my temps about 25 degrees. DO NOT RUN IT IN THE WINTER!

OK Good to know I'm not the only one with this info

I'm tempted to get some green and orange 50/50 and mix it in a cup, or pot, and heat it up and cool it down a few times to see what really happens.

Newb question, but can I add 1 liter of green coolant to the system with orange in it? Radiator leaks so level is low now, but the car is going to be parked for winter in a few days, so have to add some coolant now.

I say no, but if you do it anyway, feel free to post back the results after a few months....

I remember way back when this was first an issue. GM said do not mix the 2 because it will cause systems to gel up and plug the s%&t out of everything. Well come to find out it really wont hurt anything if they are mixed, i have done it, been that way for almost 2 years with no problems at all. THe biggest thing i had heard from my GM service guy i know, he told me its the Dex-cool (orange) itself. It is a condition where you get to much air in your system, then extreem heat is what makes it turn to jelly, and its not the good old reliable green antifreeze. The yellow you refered to, i know Global makes it, is just a universal style fulid thats made to work with all types. All of todays new vehicles use so many different types its pathetic. I know theres green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and even blue! just to be safe, keep it all one color, but orange and green mix wont gelly up ur system, orange+high temp+air will. hope this helps

If it were me, I would want to be safe about it. I would drain it like you did, run a cleaner through it twice, rinse it with a hose, fill it with water, drain it, then refill with the good green stuff.

That's just me though, I hate coolant system problems with a passion.
