Default Valve spring swap

im planning on doing a camp swap here soon (iplan on running the cc306) and i was wondering if i could change the valve springs on the heads while they are still on the car. I really dont want to take the heads off but if i have to then i have to.

Also can use the stock retainers on the valve springs i plan on running? They are CCA-986-16 on summitracing.com or are there valve springs out there that can re-use the stock retainers?

Yes you van change the springs with the heads on the car.

No 986 springs will not work with the stock retainers or spring shims.
26918 is a spring is a great option.

yea changing them on the car is easy, they rent the tool at Autozone and you get buy a nicer tool from a "higher end" auto parts store e.g. NAPA, Pepboys, et cetera.

but ditto on the retainers and seats. Its a good idea to change them just in case they are worn, also they arent too much more.

Stay clear of the 918's. Patriot sells a cam kit that will work with the 306, the golds will work fine. $255 including springs, seats, seals, locks, and titanium retainers.

A couple of years ago I used these springs on a LQ9 (6.0) and just right after they were installed I was cruising at about 60 when one let go. Long story short I called Comp and they wanted the pieces back immediately, they paid for the repairs and all was well. So who knows what really was going on??

its was a few batches of the 918's they are past those problems, I made sure when I bought mine that they were a new batch, when you buy them they have a batch number and from this you can tell which are the faulty ones, Call Comp Cams they will verify this

Comp hasn't admited there is a problem yet, unless you are talking about them breaking a few years ago. It just started happening again recently. If it was just a few batches the range of batch #'s wouldn't be spread out over 2000+ batches.

I cant really afford the fancy pants 918's. Im doing a budget camp swap so i would like to use standard valve springs. Would the springs i picked out work with my stock heads with no machining or could someone recomend some that are not the 918's

Putting a cam in that revs to 6800+ and skimping on the valve train is NOT a good idea.

I'm not going to be spinning the motor to 6800+ and i realize i wont get the full potiential of the cam. However later on when i port the heads ill put the 918's but for now ill keep it around 6-6200 rpm
