converter will help more, but I would say do both. mt radials are entirely too much traction for 2.73s. it probably dead hooked and then bogged because the load was too great.

I respectfully disagree with infinitebird. Get gears 1'st then converter. If you had 3.23's or 3.42's I would say converter 1'st but my car came with 2.73's and they sucked! It is so much more fun to drive now with the 3.73's and is faster throughout. Also a converter will work better with the 3.73's. If you have 2.73's and any decent size converter it will feel very loose and wont get its full potential. Just my opinion speeking from experience with an A4 with 2.73's.

btw I owned an auto car with 2.73s and I agree they do suck horribly. I was just going by what ive heard from some others that said they found a stall helped them more than gears, but I agree that it's pretty essential to be replacing the 2.73s at some point, whether its first or not.

right now im stall only and I like it. going around town i actually like the loose feeling. i can rev up quickly and let off and not move a lot. then when i slam it it will grab and throw you back. gears will be in the future though. most definetly

I say gears then stall. Getting the gears first assures you will get the right stall for your set-up. If you plan on doing motor work, ie: cam, wait till you do that before getting the stall. They all work together and you don't want to buy parts twice.

I replaced my gear last week(3.23's went to 3.73's) and am very happy with the results.

car will feel crazy with the stall and stock 2.73s, but i swapped out for 3.23 gears from 4.10s after the stall, because the car just did not need that much gear anymore.

either one should help a bunch.

Stall First, Then Gears.

2.73's have dead spots. Getting a stall eliminates them.
A stall and stickies will be great mods that work together well.

Many members on here that put gears and a stall in have went through a couple sets of gears, aftermarket gears will break with stickies if your car see's the 1320 alot.

If its just for a DD, do both.
If you track it alot, I'd go verter first.

You will see much better gains with the verter, .3-.6, compared to that of gears, .1-.3,
and youre stock rearend will last alot longer.

Stall and Stickies.

( It all really depends on your future mods and what youre planning on. If this is a car you plan to keep for awhile, might as well save the money for gears and put it towards a Ford 9" or Strange 12 Bolt. Just my .02 )

Just based on theory, the gears would come first for a DD. Stall would come first for a track car.

I'm installing my 3.42s in a couple weeks. I chose to do them before a stall

A) because they're cheaper. I found a used 3.42 set that was factory installed from a 6-speed. Then the installation kit, ring gear spacer, and solid pinion spacer. All for around $250ish. Stall will run between $450 and $800.

B) It's my DD. I believe it will feel better with 3.42s and a stock stall than it would with 2.73s and a 3400.

so gears will help the bogging off the line just as much as the vert?
