LS1 rack and pinion swap
I'm sure there not much better then the LT1's but its a FreeBee...
So, i have a 97 lt1 and the pinion is going bad(when steering right the steering wheel will not return and sometimes i will notice play in the steering)...
i can score an LS1 rack and pinion for free(from 2001 WS6) and i just need to know if it will all be a direct bolt on or if i need to do some modifications.
I have pacsetter LT's so the rack shouldn't interfere with the headers.
thank you

Hey man, I was in the same boat! Ok heres my setup. 94 Z28 LT1, Pacesetter shorties, stock rack. The stock rack was causing the steering shaft to rub on the header. I swapped out the rack with one out of an LS1, and modified the steering shaft a little, and it was done. Theres probably an inch of room after the swap. The only thing you have to do with the stock shaft is drill out the yellow plastic holes and telescope it out a little. After its the length you want it, which you determine when you install it, just throw a little weld bead on the end to keep it in place. If you dont have a welder, just mark it with a scribe or something sharp, or even a marker if its clean enough, pull it out, and drill and tap a hole for a little bolt or something.
Oh yea, I agree with LTBandit, You should know what your talking about beforeyou post.

so this rack clears your pacesetters? post up pictures...bc the lt rack goes through the headers...the ls1 rack goes around...i think pacesetters first primary goes over tht top of the rest if so thats the only reason it works...it wont work with hooker lt ect...please believe me that i know what im talking about, i bet ive done more in a month on f-bodys than you in your whole life

Keep in mind I'm the guy that helped YOU get you car running..
Find me a pic of where the LT1 #1 Primary has the Steering Linkage through it with the Pacesetters..lets see it Mr. "i bet ive done more in a month on f-bodys than you in your whole life" Please..I can smell the bullshit from here..
This time you my friend are wrong, yes wrong, as in opposite of right..so take your cocky attitude and shove it up your *******...
This guy had a genuine question, and you wanted to be a cocktard..
So basically..
And for the record..you just been
Merv:1 Daniel:0
So shut the **** up, and get some knowledge about these cars..
Now that the original poster found out that this works..this is to show anyone else that may want to know..
The LS1 Rack does indeed move the Linkage farther away from the Headers, and I, unlike some others, highly recommend doing it, and this is coming from a person who uses one..
If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know..

lol...go back and learn how to read i clearly said that the pacesetter it DOESNT go throught the first primary...fucktard...I CLEARLY said that pacesetter first primary goes over the others.....i said hookers go through....and you cant use ls1 rack with hoookers.
geez...your an idiot...ive owned 8 f-bodies...ive also built lt1 and assembeled them by myself...along with many other things, and working at 3 professional racing shops in dfw as a mechanic....AND working on cars that make more the 4 times the power of your stroker
finally just to breark into the 7's i wouldent need to waste a bunch of money on a 402 stroker and l92 setup....i did that with a CAM ONLY, many others went way fast with bolt ons......
stock heads/intake/tb/injectores/bottom end lt1 setup for nitrous...it went 7.60 at 91 in 90+ degree texas heat...**** my new cam only motor runs 7.40's with stock 3.42 out back and a baby stall also setup for nitrous...at 93-94 with 19 degrees of timing.....and thats SLOW compared to other cam only cars...
so get your weak *** stroker outa here, go """"blow off your tires from 70 punch"""" or you could drive down here to dallas so i can whoop your *** with a stock motor and a buncha junk parts...i mean your 402 alone cost more than ive got in my whole car

This is getting annoying
Guys, Come on. Bitchfest 2007 is now over. The fact of the matter is, a 93-97 F body with an LT1, equipped with a steering rack out of an LS1 will have MORE ROOM THAN THE STOCK RACK. More room for headers that is. End of story.
I listened to the MERV on this one and have the pics to prove it. Not good ones of the rack in the car, but pics of the racks side by side like the Merv has. Ill post my pics as soon as I can here. With dialup it takes a little longer than a Ford in the quarter.
Read my statement up on top, and know this.....If you have an LT1, Pacesetter shorties, and an LS1 rack with a modified shaft, youll have room to spare. IT WORKS. I HAVE DONE IT. Long tube headers I cant vouch for though.
