I have seen people go 60 0ver. I would just go with the standard 30 though. better selection of off the shelf parts and itleaves you room for the future.

396 is as big as i would go. You can go bigger but it starts getting hit and miss as far as reliability.

Boreing to get displacement would be a big mistake. Strength of the wall goes down FAST with very little gain in displacement.

It also is NOT displacement that makes power, it is airflow which is the job of the heads and cam, displacement will affect powerband and peak power rpm but not so much peak power number.

Someone on a racing forum I frequent put it well when he said "build the biggest engine your heads will support". I know that goes against everything newbs "know" about there being "no replacement for displacement" but it is true that cubes only work if there are heads to feed them.

Biggest benefit of the big cube engines is the torque. Peak hp will not raise much, since power is made in the heads and cam. Most only go up to 396, but people have done over 400 - TPiS had a 409 package for some time. The benefit for the the extra price paid is debatable over a 383.

Block needs to go through thorough testing before going that big either way.

If you want big cubes then you need to look to an LSx, since they can support well north of 500ci now!

You could DD a 396 LT1.

How drivable it will be is determined more by the heads/cam setup, gearing, tuning and drivetrain then the power itself.

i wasn't going to displacement only! i was looking for more torque, also i hope the heads im looking to invest in will flow enough. But we'll see... It's hard to decide between 383 or 396, for the price is it worth it?

The bigger bore will probably perform better if you are running bigger than stock valves (regardless of stroke).

Use a 5.85" rod for 396. You can do 6" but the piston ends up being a little small.

The rod ratio is kinda crappy on a 396, it is hard on the thrust side. Most 396 combo's have the oil ring in the wrist pin.

You can build enough power with a 383 to put you in the ditch on the street and it's life span is a good bit longer than a 396+ cube engine.

I would say a .040 overbore is max safely.

Please substantiate that statement. Have you had a bad experience with a larger than .040 bore with an LT1?

As you bore the engine you get closer to water pasages, engine reliability might be lost due to overheating.....
