Default Small Base Circle Cam

Is anyone running Scat 6" rods (2ICR6000) on a 383? If you are, I need to know if you're running a small base circle cam. I just bought my cam without even thinking about clearance.

It's a custom cam, upper .500s lift and around 230 duration. It's a flowtech induction cam.

I would bet that you will have some issues.
If you have a set of calipers or a mic. Measure the lobes on the cam from top to bottom. Then subtract the lobe lift and that will give you the base circle.....if it is over 1.05".....slide it in and rotate the motor slowly by hand(I am assumeing that the motor is on a stand).....if it clears....good...now check by how much....if it don't....find out who made the cam for FlowTech and contact them.
The manufacture may regrind the cam with a small base for free or a small fee.

Ohh....I also meant to add that 1.050" is a standard "small base " spec for a hyd. roller cam.
Not to say all small base cams measure 1.050".....just as a guide line.

Thanks alot - heading to the garage to measure.

I don't have the block assembled yet, still gathering parts.

Haven't balanced it yet. I will probably clearance the rods... I'm over the 1.050 number.

before I did anything....I would mock the motor up and check it.
I don't like grinding on my rods and I don't really like small base cams with std. SBC bearing journal diameters(think about a wet noodle spinning).
But depending on the app(assumption aleart.....under 6500 rpm based on cam duration and CI.)....I would have the cam reground....but it's 6 one way and 1/2 dozen the other if you are in the RPM range that I am thinking.

Yeah, I won't be spinning the motor over 6500 (won't know my actual shift points until I dyno it and figure out where it stops making power). I am not a fan of small base circle cams either, I think I would rather grind on the rods if necessary. I'll revisit this issue later on as I get closer to assembly. Thanks alot for your help. What's the acceptable clearance between the cam and rods?
