I love it when people try and sell L99's as LT1's! LOL
Today was a most intersting day. I am selling a 1998 Ford Taurus on craigslist and in the Ad I offered to take in trade an LT1 engine.
Anyway I get a call this morning from someone stating they have an LT1 engine out of a camaro and its complete with all accessories, intake, distributor and manifolds. I tell the guy bring it down and lets make the trade.
Guy pulls up with a flat bed and I go outside to meet him by the Taurus. He says he will take the Taurus.
I then jump up on the back of his flat bed to see what looks to be an L99. A quick glance at the emissions set up and I am most sure. Only one more check to make. Check the back drivers side of the block and sure enough... Its a 4.3 L99!
I inform the guy his LT1 is a 4.3 liter L99. He looked a little depressed but I can assure you I was more depressed than he was. He then said to me "But it come out of a Camaro". I told him that whoever told him that lied. Then he asked me how I knew and then I showed him how there was no 5.7 cast in the block, and the number was that of an L99. I told him the cast iron heads and caprice/impalla air snorkel should have tipped him off from the start.
Needless to say I still have this POS 98 Taurtus but its better than a boat anchor 4.3 L99.
A lot of people mistake an L99 for an LT1 just like the days of old when people tried selling 305's as 350's. I hope maybe this thread might help someone. Remember an LT1 block's casting numbers will end 5327 and 5.7 will be cast into the back drivers side of the block.
Its tuff out there.

I bought an LT1 w/4l60E, ECM and wiring for $400 about 4 months ago. I bought it, and after I read this post I realized I never even checked the casting number. So I, with a lump in my throat I ran out to the garage, and there were the numbers I as looking for. "5.7" You had me worried. You know what, I never knew they even made a 4.3 V8 until I read your post. ONly reason I ended up with this motor and trans, was because I am new to this whole hot rod building thing, and didn't know any better. I got lucky sounds like. I appreciate the info.

I was just curious if that was another way to tell it's an LT1. My car has 327 cast, or stamped, into the block somewhere.

Is there any performance potential from the 4.3 at all? I have one that my parents bought me that they were told was an LT1. Since I can't sell it I thought about swapping it into an s10 to make a nice dd. I would assume heads and cam work but can regular lt1 headers be used on them and such?

You have to stay concervative with the cam because it will get peaky fast. Have to stick with the stock heads too due to the small bore.
standard headers will work just fine.
I think it would be a nice DD motor if not looking for big power.
My car actually came with one, I pulled it a little over 5 years ago.

Been done, no point too it since the stock 3.48 crank will take more rpms than the pcm will allow.
If you use the L99 crank and rods then you can use a stock LT1 piston and the deck height comes out stock, but you can't trust the rods at high enough rpms to take advantage.
I think the old 302/327 stuff was done because they lacked the metalugy to make repiable parts in longer strokes at high rpms. That is no longer the case.

There is at least one L99 running 10's in NHRA Super Stock. I had a cam only L99 in my Camaro a few years back that ran 7.85 in the 1/8 th (before the IHRA banned it from class!). I have another one sitting on an engine stand that is a little better. Sooner or later, I will put it in something and see what it will run. They are a fun little motor.

There is a Stock Eliminator Caprice running 12s with one but that is it far as I know, well besides the examples Darren listed. Have to understand though that guys like Darren manage what mid to low 10s on as cast stock heads and intake and limited to stock lift. Comparing those setups to the typical street/strip car is apples and oranges. Those guys enjoy the challenge of going fast within a set bunch of rules.
Not many guys bother with any more than very basic bolton on them because an LT1 is a direct fit in their place, for what you would spend on a budget L99 head porting you can drop in a junkyard LT1 and be well ahead.
