Default using a 700r4

Trying to figure this out for a friend who is looking at getting a 95 z28.
4l60e is pretty much shot, but there are several 700r4's laying around he can use, all from 3rd gen fbodies. A 700r4 will bolt right up to the LT1 right? Also what do you do about the PCM, just leave it unplugged, the trans connectors?
Just looking for insight, searching hasn't produced any results for me, thanks -Corey

Sucks, he has a 4l60e kicking around also, but its from a LS1 car, heard there is a conversion kit for it, anyone have a link for that?

Well, 92 (vette) and 93 (Vette, Firebird, Camaro) came with 700R4 (4L60), which is what mine has. I'm not sure how these newer 700s work, but I know my speedo is still mechanical, but I think they still have a VSS as well, so that'll at least let you have your speedo working. You MIGHT have to get the PCM tuned though, maybe to an M6 setup, not sure about torque converter lockup then. Also, you'll need to switch throttle bodies since you won't have the peg for the Kickdown cable. If he doesn't have a 52/58mm the BBK I have from what I can tell is the exact same style as my 91 TPI, so you might be able to get one cheaper on eBay if you search 90-92 TPI.

As for a LS1 4L60E, msg the_merv, he knows what is all needed. I think it's just the flywheel, but not 100% sure.

I am running a 700R4 in my 94 Formula...it has been converted to a manual valve body (no TV cable) and runs a manual lock up for the convertor. Have not bothered with the adaptor for the speedo.

For the cost involved in doing the work to the 700 you could just rebuild the 4L60E

He doesn't have to run a manual valve body though. Yours is setup for racing, where as it sounds like the OP isn't going to be doing that with his.

Leaving the tranny harness unplugged wont deal with lockup.

I would consider rebuilding the 4L60e and using a spare 700 for hardparts.

All the Internals are pretty much identical between a 700R4 and a LT1 4L60E.. you could possible have the LT1 rebuilt with the ones that you have. Like said above, use them for parts.

Thanks guys, my friend didn't get back to me, so not sure if he is even going to go look at it. The person selling it stated they have been driving around with only 1st and 2nd for about 8 months, so who knows how ragged on the engine is.

Are 4l60e's known to lose only 3rd, I mean can it shift from 2 to 4th or no? Car has a dead opti now, person selling car has stated thats why it won't run, but at least now I can tell him that rebuilding the current trans is his best option. He has a 4l60e from a 2000 LS1 car, but I have already looked up on that, and looks like that would also require more work than it is worth.
Thanks everyone. -Corey

It is fairly common for the 3-4 clutchpack to go taking out 3rd and 4th. I have never heard of just losing 3rd so maybe talk to a 4L60E guy on that.
