Default '93 LT1 T56 Better Gear Ratio?

Is this true that the first year of the LT1 and T56 had a lower gear ratio compared to later T56's? What was the ratio?

In '93 the 6-speeds weren't T-56's, they were M28's and M29's. The M28's came with 2.73's and the M29's with 3.23's. In '94 they switched to the T-56 that came standard with 3.42's out back until '02.

Kinda correct 93's m6 is still a T56. The M28 and M29 refers to the gear ratios. The 94+ are refered to as MN6. Also the 93's don't have skip shift.

Year 1993 (M28) / 1993 (M29) / 1994+ (MN6)

1st: 3.36 / 2.97 / 2.66
2nd: 2.07 / 2.07 / 1.78
3rd: 1.35 / 1.43 / 1.30
4th: 1.00 / 1.00 / 1.00
5th: 0.80 / 0.80 / 0.74
6th: 0.62 / 0.62 / 0.50

The RPO code is G92...if you have that you have the low ratio's. I have them and the first 3 gears were identical to the m12 found in the gto's and c5 z06 t-56 which is cool. 4.10's in a 93 will be very aggressive and more like 4.56's in the regular t56s...

Actually the first 4 gears are...the final drive is a bit higher to make up for the fact they came with 3.23's instead...

What kind of gear is in the rear? If its stock all 93 m6 had either 2.73 or 3.23. You simply multiply the gear ratio by the rear end ratio.

1993 M28 w/ 3.23
1st 10.85
2nd 6.69
3rd 4.36
4th 3.23
5th 2.58
6th 2.00

I have a 93 with the m29. I run a 3.73 which would be like the MN6 with a 4.10, but a little deeper. My highway cruising rpm's are even higher than the MN6 with a 4.10 which kinda sucks, but overall I like it. Even more so for the fact that they are rare(M29).

I know the feeling I'm in the exact same boat w/ mine and thinking going to 3.55's in a 12 bolt next yr. The powerband is great though.

I wouldnt mind doing a M29 swap but from when I spoke to T-56 rebuilds, the M29s cant handle the same of power as the 94+ T-56s.

Like said before, they are all T-56s, how ever what your reffering to are the RPO codes.

+1 I heard the same thing as far as power handling. I heard the 28's are good to 450rwtq whereas the 29's are good to 400rwtq.

Any idea what the key component difference is? Something that can be upgraded?..

I'd love to put in 4.10's to my rear and have only the 6th gear ratio changed to like... ummm... 0.40 to get that 6th gear highway RPM back to what I have with 3.42's but still have the 4.10's benifit 1st-5th. Anyone ever heard of that being done? Is that even possible? Sorry for the thread-jack.... just made me wonder from reading this.

Actually the M28 with the 3.36 is usually the least desired due to the larger RPM drop from 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd. It is also the weaker of the 2, rated at 350 vs 400 for the M29 and 450 for the mm6 (94+ T56). All M28's came with 2.73's, and M29's came with 3.23's. Even though both 93's are weaker than MM6's, they can be upgraded just the same as the 94+ trans due to most other parts being equal (other than gears of course).

BTW, I have a M29 w/steel 3-4 fork in my 95 with stock 3.42's and love it! The 6th gear is the only thing that would keep me from getting 3.73's right now. I have heard of a few people swapping out the 5-6 gears and countershaft from a 94+ into their M29, which is similar to the ZO6/GTO trans ratios.
