Default Third Gear Grinding

Okay when to the track and made a couple of passes. Then I drove home I noticed when ever I shifted into third it grinds really bad. The only time I can get it into third is from a stop, but if I will go if I go through the grind, but I don't cause I know that would be a bad thing so I go 124. Are my sycros in third shot? Is this going to be expensive?

Sounds expensive to me. Probabaly syncros. I would look for a used tranny.

I have the exact same problem in my 97 LT1 T56 and I was told it was the syncros. Before I had the 3rd gear grinding problem it would pop out of 3rd gear while driving at slower speeds, so I may also have a bent shift fork. I'm looking at a rebuild at sixspeedsinc.

Your basically looking at a rebuild. it will wear componets worse if continued to be used in that condition.

Yes, because a rebuild isnt just a rebuild, driving when you know you need one will just add more parts that you will need to buy because of excessive heat. So if you going to do a full on rebuild and replace everything is the only reason you should still drive it. otherwise it could just be 3-4 synchro

My car does this when the car is cold going into both 3rd and 4th, but goes away after it warms up. This is only a few hundred miles after having my tranny rebuilt with all new bearings. I'm pretty pissed about having spent all that money and now having this issue.

You will need more parts in that case. Or worse yet the rebuilder doesn't replace those worn componets & puts the marginal/ or crap 3 speed gear & syncro back in.

Well its not the third gear synchro its the 3/4 synchro so that means if three is messed up it will still grind going into fourth, I just let the RPMs drop a little more and it usually doesn't grind

It never grinds going into forth, just going to third, and downshifting to third.

Join the club. Mine is doing the same thing. I have been driving mine as well but go 1-2-4 with no issues. The only time my 4th grinds is if I am coasting and try to put it in 4th, other than that only grinds in 3rd but sometimes it will go in without too much of a fuss. I too have to drive my car right now so I have no option. Before this I was having some issues with the clutch sticking to the floor after a hard run. I will probably need to update the hydraulics as well. Hope the clutch is ok for now though. Good luck to all who have to deal with this ****.

Same problem here after a night at the track. 4th works fine but 3rd grinds when I put it in. Only 3rd. Upshifting or downshifting. I found it dosn't grind if you "properly" doubble clutch. Is thisa synchro issue?
